THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 33 / 40

Chapter 33 - THE WOMAN WHO CALLED HER GRANDDAUGHTERHarper stared at Elaine.

Laura shook her head.

“The record is false.”

Elaine did not deny it.

Samuel moved beside Harper.

“What does maternal match mean?”

Elaine answered quietly.

“Laura is my biological daughter.”

Victor laughed.

The missing child Elaine had spent decades searching for was not Victor.

It was Laura.

Victor was the son raised in Laura’s place by Elaine’s husband.

The identities had been switched before either child could remember.

Elaine created the preservation program to find her daughter.

She found Laura years later inside the Hale family network.

But by then, Laura had a life and did not want the truth made public.

Victor discovered the records and realized he had been the replacement child from the beginning.

His obsession with replacing others came from learning that his own identity had been assigned.

Laura looked at Elaine.

“You promised Harper would never know.”

“She needed the complete family map.”

Victor approached Harper.

“Now you understand. There are no real families. Only stories people agree to repeat.”

Harper looked at Bennett’s photograph.

“No. Families are choices people keep making after the story fails.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

He ordered Nolan and the others restrained.

Then he placed Laura and Elaine in separate chairs.

“You have one master key,” he told Harper.

“The white butterfly can release one.”

Harper recognized the repeated pattern.

One twin.

One Laura.

One parent.

Victor needed her to accept the forced choice.

She placed the key on the floor and crushed it beneath her shoe.

Victor stared.

“You killed both release codes.”

“No.”

Harper showed him the metal stem hidden inside the butterfly.

“The wings were decoration.”

She inserted the stem into the central console.

Every restraint opened.

Elaine attacked Victor.

Laura pulled Harper toward the escape route.

Gunfire filled the laboratory.

Samuel dragged Nolan behind a medical cabinet.

Benjamin fought one of the guards.

Rebecca reached Victor first.

She held him against the glass.

“You taught us identity could be taken.”

Victor smiled through blood.

“And what did you learn?”

Rebecca looked toward Laura.

“That borrowed memories can still make real choices.”

She pushed Victor through the emergency containment door and locked it.

Alarms sounded.

The room began filling with neurological gas.

Victor struck the glass.

Elaine watched him.

“He is still my son.”

Laura caught her arm.

“And he will kill Harper.”

Elaine reached toward the release.

Then the lights failed.

When they returned, the containment room was empty.

On the glass, Victor had written:

THE RED BOX WAS NEVER IN THE PIANO.

Harper touched her head.

The memory had been planted.
