Chapter 35 - Walter Was Never the Man in the Photographs

Walter was not one man.

The name was operational.

A title.

Caroline said it only after Noah forced the truth into the room.

Claire stared at her.

"How many?"

"At least three."

Reed swore under his breath.

"The Walter who founded the nonprofit."

"Vincent."

"The Walter in Croatia?"

"Unknown."

"The Walter from Daniel's childhood?"

"Different."

Claire felt rage rise.

"Then who is Walter?"

Caroline answered quietly.

"A role assigned to whoever controlled the active phase."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

Another identity system.

Another substitution.

Another disappearing face.

Noah continued.

"When Meadow was five, one of them forgot his mask."

Claire turned.

"At Lake Rowan?"

He nodded.

"She saw him."

"Who?"

"I don't know his real name."

"Describe him."

"Older."

"Scar on his jaw."

"Walked with a slight limp."

Claire looked at Caroline.

Her face had changed.

"You know."

Caroline said nothing.

"Who?"

"No."

"Who is he?"

Caroline walked toward the window.

"Noah, take the others upstairs."

He hesitated.

"Now."

Wren stayed.

Caroline looked at her.

"You too."

"No."

"Wren."

"I'm done leaving rooms when adults want secrets."

Claire almost smiled despite everything.

Caroline closed her eyes.

Then surrendered.

"Fine."

She turned toward Claire.

"The man Meadow saw was Judge Malcolm Hurst."

Silence.

Claire stared.

"The missing judge."

"Yes."

"He was Walter?"

"One of them."

"Since when?"

"Since before Pair Five."

Reed looked stunned.

"Hurst wasn't just protecting the operation."

"He ran the legal phase."

Claire remembered the courtroom.

The rulings.

The sealed records.

The professionals who always seemed to know which language would sound reasonable.

"He built Pair Six."

"Yes."

"And Meadow saw him at Lake Rowan."

"Yes."

"That is why he's after her."

Caroline nodded.

"She can identify him outside the judicial context."

Wren whispered:

"Why does that matter now? Everyone knows he's involved."

Caroline looked at her.

"Because he isn't missing."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"What?"

"Hurst disappeared because he became Walter again."

Claire stared.

"Where?"

Caroline reached into another folder.

She pulled out a recent photograph.

A man boarding a private aircraft.

Baseball cap.

Gray jacket.

Face partly turned.

Claire stared.

She recognized him.

Not as Hurst.

As someone else.

Officer Morales.

Claire's stomach dropped.

"No."

Reed stepped closer.

"That's not possible."

Caroline laid down a second photograph.

Morales at the courthouse.

A third.

Morales escorting Meadow.

A fourth.

Hurst twenty years younger.

Side by side, the similarities emerged.

Jawline.

Ear shape.

Eyes.

Claire felt physically ill.

"Morales is Hurst?"

"Not exactly."

"Stop doing that."

Caroline's voice hardened.

"They are brothers."

Claire stared.

"Hurst and Morales."

"Half-brothers."

"Does Morales know?"

"I don't know."

Claire immediately reached for her phone.

No signal.

She looked toward Reed.

He checked his.

Nothing.

Caroline's face changed.

"The island jammer."

"Was that you?"

"No."

Wren stood.

"Someone's here."

A boat engine sounded outside.

Everyone froze.

Caroline moved to the window.

A black vessel approached the dock.

No flag.

Four people aboard.

One raised a hand.

Claire recognized the posture before the face.

Officer Morales.

Her chest tightened.

He stepped onto the dock alone.

Caroline whispered:

"He found us."

Claire turned.

"Which one?"

Caroline did not answer.

Morales walked up the path.

No gun visible.

Hands open.

"Claire!"

His voice carried through the house.

"It's me!"

Wren looked toward Claire.

"Do you trust him?"

The question was unbearable.

Claire thought of everything Morales had done.

Protection.

Evidence.

Calls.

Warnings.

The birthday pencils.

The courthouse.

The safe house.

The gray car.

Every moment now had a second interpretation.

Morales reached the front porch.

He knocked once.

"Claire."

Then:

"Do not let Caroline open the basement."

Caroline went pale.

Claire turned toward her.

"What basement?"

Caroline did not answer.

Wren stared.

"You told me there wasn't one."

Outside, Morales shouted:

"She has been lying to you!"

Caroline moved toward a locked door beside the staircase.

Claire stepped in front of her.

"What's down there?"

Caroline's hands shook.

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Pair Zero."

"No."

Caroline looked at Claire.

"Of Pair Seven."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"What is Pair Seven?"

Before Caroline could answer, something struck the front door.

Once.

Twice.

The lock splintered.

Morales shouted from outside:

"Claire, get away from her!"

Caroline grabbed Claire's wrist.

"Listen to me."

"Let go."

"If that man enters, he will take the children."

Wren stepped backward.

Claire pulled free.

"Which man?"

Caroline looked at the door.

"Morales isn't Morales."

Claire felt cold.

Another impact shook the frame.

Reed moved toward the hallway.

"Then who is he?"

Caroline whispered:

"Anna's son."

Claire's breath stopped.

Mother 3.

Anna Vale.

One of the three women of Pair Zero.

Morales burst through the door.

He stood in the entrance.

Breathing hard.

Unarmed.

His eyes found Claire.

Then Wren.

Then Caroline.

"Don't listen to her."

Caroline reached into her coat.

Reed raised his hands.

"Everybody stop."

Morales stared at Caroline.

"You buried my mother."

Wren whispered:

"What?"

Caroline's face collapsed.

Morales took one step forward.

"You told them Anna disappeared."

Claire looked at Caroline.

"Did she?"

Caroline said nothing.

Morales continued.

"No."

His voice broke.

"She never left House 317."

Claire felt dread rise.

Morales pointed toward the locked basement door.

"She's been down there for twenty-nine years."

No one moved.

Then three knocks came from beneath the floor.

Slow.

Distinct.

Human.

Wren grabbed Claire's hand.

Another three knocks.

Then a woman's voice rose faintly from below.

"Claire?"

Claire stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

"I've been waiting for you."

Caroline closed her eyes.

Morales whispered:

"That is Anna Vale."

Claire looked at the basement door.

May you like

The woman below spoke again.

"And one of your daughters is not who you think she is."
