Chapter 21 - The Girl in the Empty School

The building was an abandoned private school outside Fredericksburg.

It had closed six years earlier after a flood.

Public records listed the property as condemned.

Walter's shell company purchased it four months later.

Federal agents surrounded the property before dawn.

Claire stayed at the command post.

Again.

She hated staying behind.

She understood why.

Still hated it.

Meadow sat with her this time.

She insisted.

"If they find Wren, I want to know."

Claire agreed only after Dr. Singh joined them.

The raid began at 5:12 a.m.

No shots.

No alarms.

No guards.

The school appeared empty.

Then agents found fresh footprints.

Food.

Beds.

Medical supplies.

And a classroom with cameras mounted behind mirrors.

On the board someone had written:

PAIR 05 - FINAL COMPARISON.

Meadow stared at the live feed.

"What does that mean?"

Dr. Singh answered before Claire could.

"We don't know yet."

Agents moved into the basement.

There were six bedrooms.

All empty.

One contained clothing matching what Wren wore in the video.

Another held a camera tripod.

The video had been recorded there.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

"She's gone."

Priya's voice came through.

"Recently."

"How recently?"

"Coffee is still warm."

Claire stood.

"They knew you were coming."

A second team entered an office.

Inside they found photographs covering an entire wall.

Claire.

Meadow.

Daniel.

Judith.

Leah.

Reed.

Morales.

Priya.

Every person involved in the case.

Red strings connected names, dates, addresses.

At the center were two photographs.

Meadow.

Wren.

Below them:

ORIGINAL ASSIGNMENT UNRESOLVED.

Claire whispered, "Assignment."

Meadow looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

An agent opened a filing cabinet.

Empty.

A second cabinet.

Empty.

A third.

One folder.

PAIR 05.

Priya removed it.

Inside was a single page.

The top line read:

MATERNAL BOND TEST - SUBJECT C.

Claire's chest tightened.

"Subject C?"

Priya read silently.

Then stopped.

"What?"

Priya looked toward the camera.

"Claire, I think Subject C is you."

Claire's mouth went dry.

The page described observational sessions.

MATERNAL SUBJECT FAILED TO IDENTIFY EXCHANGE WITHIN EXPECTED WINDOW.

A second line:

EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT REMAINED STABLE DESPITE SUBJECT REPLACEMENT.

Meadow stared at the screen.

Claire could not speak.

They had studied her too.

Not just the children.

Her love.

Her instincts.

Her ability to distinguish daughters she had been told did not both exist.

She had been another test subject.

Dr. Singh reached for Meadow's hand.

Meadow pulled away.

"Mom didn't fail."

Claire turned.

Meadow's voice became louder.

"She didn't know."

No one answered.

"She didn't fail."

Claire wrapped her arms around her.

"No, sweetheart."

But Meadow was angry now.

"They lied to her."

"Yes."

"They drugged us."

"Yes."

"They changed our clothes and names and expected her to know?"

Claire held her tighter.

"Yes."

Meadow looked toward the screen.

"Then they're the ones who failed."

Claire closed her eyes.

Priya's voice returned.

"We found another document."

Claire looked up.

An agent held a photograph.

Not Wren.

Not Meadow.

Claire.

Nine months pregnant.

Leaving her doctor's office.

Taken from across the street.

Behind it was another photo.

Claire asleep in a hospital bed after delivery.

Someone had stood close enough to photograph her face.

Then another.

Daniel signing papers.

Judith holding an infant.

Margaret Vale watching through a glass window.

Finally, one last photograph.

Claire leaving the hospital with Meadow.

Behind her, in another corridor, a nurse carried a second baby through a secured door.

Wren.

Claire stared at the image.

Nine years of grief arrived all at once for a child she had never known she lost.

Then the building alarm sounded.

Agents shouted.

Smoke poured from the west wing.

"Fire!"

Someone had triggered an incendiary system.

The live video shook as teams evacuated.

Priya grabbed the Pair 05 folder.

Flames raced through the ceiling.

The school had been prepared to destroy itself.

But before the cameras cut, Meadow pointed at the screen.

"There!"

Claire looked.

At the far end of a hallway stood a girl.

Wren.

She was not running from the flames.

She stood completely still.

Watching the agents.

Then a woman grabbed her arm.

The woman turned briefly toward the camera.

Claire recognized the face.

Marian.

May you like

Or Margaret.

The feed went black.
