Chapter 33 - Claire Went Without Her Daughters

Claire left Meadow with Priya.

She hated it.

Meadow hated it more.

But neither argued after Wren's video.

For once, an adult had explicitly said the children should stay out.

Claire chose to honor that.

Reed traveled with her as legal counsel.

A federal team coordinated with Croatian authorities.

They reached the island before sunset.

House 317 stood above the water.

White walls.

Blue shutters.

The same building from Walter's photograph.

Claire stepped onto the dock.

No gunfire.

No alarms.

Caroline stood at the top of the path.

Wren was not beside her.

Claire stopped twenty feet away.

"Where is she?"

"Inside."

"Safe?"

Caroline's mouth tightened.

"As safe as I can make her."

Claire walked closer.

"That phrase doesn't mean anything to me anymore."

"Good."

Claire studied her face.

The resemblance was undeniable.

But resemblance no longer proved anything.

"You said not to bring children."

"Yes."

"Yet Wren is here."

"She came before I could stop her."

Claire believed that more easily than she wanted to.

"Why didn't you send her back?"

"Because Walter was hunting her."

"He's in custody."

"No."

Claire froze.

"We watched him get shot."

"You watched a man you were told was Walter get shot."

Reed stepped forward.

"Excuse me?"

Caroline looked at him.

"Walter learned from Margaret."

Identities.

Substitutions.

Doubles.

Claire felt cold.

"The man in custody isn't Walter."

"Correct."

"Who is he?"

"His younger half-brother."

Claire stared.

"Name?"

"Vincent Hale."

"Why would he pretend to be Walter?"

"He didn't."

Caroline turned toward the house.

"Walter pretended to be Vincent."

Claire's head hurt.

"Start over."

Inside, House 317 looked less like a laboratory than she expected.

Children's drawings.

Books.

Shoes by the door.

Several bedrooms.

But locks on none.

Wren sat at a dining table with five other young people.

A teenage boy.

Two girls around twelve.

A younger boy.

Another teenage girl.

They watched Claire carefully.

Wren did not stand.

Claire did not approach.

"Hi."

Wren nodded.

Caroline gestured toward the others.

"Survivors."

"Pairs?"

"Some."

Caroline looked toward the teenage boy.

"Some replacements."

The boy's jaw tightened.

Claire understood not to ask more.

They moved into a study.

Caroline locked the door.

"Why now?" Claire asked.

"Why reveal any of this?"

"Because Pair Six is collapsing."

"Because we found the judges."

"Some."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"How many are there?"

"Enough."

"And Walter?"

"Still free."

Claire looked toward Reed.

"What about Vincent?"

"Vincent ran much of the visible operation."

"The clippers?"

"Vincent."

"The courthouse bombing?"

"Vincent's people."

"The kidnapping?"

"Mostly Vincent."

Claire stared.

"So where has Walter been?"

Caroline's expression darkened.

"Building Pair Seven."

Reed said, "What is Pair Seven?"

Caroline opened a safe.

Inside were passports.

Photographs.

Original birth records.

And three infant bracelets.

She placed them on the table.

PAIR ZERO - A.

PAIR ZERO - B.

PAIR ZERO - C.

Claire's hands shook.

Caroline placed three birth certificates beside them.

Different names.

Different mothers.

All later voided.

Claire stared at one.

INFANT FEMALE.

MOTHER: CAROLINE BENNETT.

Another.

MOTHER: EVELYN BENNETT.

Third.

MOTHER: ANNA VALE.

Claire looked up sharply.

"Vale?"

Caroline nodded.

"Mother 3."

"Related to Margaret?"

"Younger sister."

Claire felt the room tilt.

"Margaret had another sister."

"Yes."

"Anna."

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Caroline's face became unreadable.

"No one knows."

Claire pointed toward the bracelets.

"Which one is me?"

Caroline did not answer.

"Which one?"

"I don't know."

Claire stared.

"You brought me across the world to tell me you don't know?"

"I brought you here to show you why no one knows."

Caroline opened another folder.

Inside were photographs of the three infant bracelets being removed.

Switched.

Reattached.

Then removed again.

No permanent mapping.

No reliable chain.

Claire's knees weakened.

"They destroyed it."

"Yes."

"Then why did Margaret say you knew?"

"Because Margaret believes biology determines identity."

"And you?"

Caroline looked toward the door where Wren sat beyond it.

"I stopped believing that a long time ago."

Claire felt unexpected anger.

"Convenient."

"No."

Caroline's voice hardened.

"It cost me my entire life."

Claire stared.

Caroline continued.

"I spent thirty years trying to identify which girl was mine."

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"I found all three."

Claire stopped breathing.

"My sisters."

Caroline nodded.

"All alive."

Claire whispered:

"Where?"

Caroline looked toward the window.

"One became you."

"One became someone named Rachel Monroe."

"One became..."

She hesitated.

Claire stepped closer.

"Who?"

Caroline met her eyes.

"Margaret Vale."

Claire stared.

"No."

"Not the Margaret you know."

"What does that mean?"

Caroline's voice dropped.

"The original Margaret died in 2003."

Claire felt ice move through her veins.

"The woman in custody..."

May you like

Caroline nodded.

"...is one of Pair Zero."
