Chapter 10 - The Brother Without a Name
Judith insisted the second baby died shortly after birth.
Hospital archives told a different story.
Both twins left the hospital alive. Daniel went home with Judith and Walter. David was transferred three weeks later to a private children's residence operated by a religious charity. The transfer authorization listed developmental concerns, but no diagnosis supported them.
The residence closed after allegations of illegal adoptions and falsified records. Many children vanished into unregistered placements.
Walter had served as the charity's accountant.
Detective Reed located an elderly former nurse named Ruth Mercer who remembered the twins. Daniel was healthy and quiet. David cried often and had a small crescent-shaped birthmark behind his right ear.
"Mrs. Carter did not want two," Ruth said. "Her husband said one heir was easier to shape."
Years later, Walter quietly removed David from the residence. After that, records disappeared.
Claire remembered the fake maintenance worker's gait and Meadow saying he moved like Grandpa. Perhaps the man was not Walter. Perhaps he was Walter's hidden son, raised outside the family and used when invisibility was useful.
A facial analyst reviewed security images from the protected apartment. The man's jawline resembled Daniel's. His shoulders were narrower. His right ear was partially visible.
Behind it was a pale crescent mark.
David was alive.
But his role remained unclear.
Had he set the fire for Walter? Had he stolen Meadow's documents? Was he an accomplice, a captive, or both?
Police traced a prepaid phone used near the apartment to calls with Marian Vale. One message recovered from cloud backup read: D2 becoming unstable. Keep him useful until transfer.
Investigators began referring to Daniel as D1 and David as D2, matching notation in Walter's records.
Another message from Marian said: He asks about the girl. Do not let him see her alone.
Claire wondered why David asked about Meadow.
The answer arrived through a package delivered to Leah's office.
Inside was a child's red sneaker, scuffed at the toe.
Meadow had lost its matching shoe two years earlier during a family picnic at a lakeside park. Daniel said it must have fallen from the car.
Beneath the shoe lay a flash drive and a note printed in block letters.
I did not touch her. I kept what they left behind. Ask Daniel what happened at Lake Rowan.
The drive contained photographs taken at the picnic. Several showed Meadow playing near the water. In the background, Daniel spoke with a thin man wearing sunglasses. Another image showed Walter, supposedly dead for four years, seated inside a parked van.
The final image showed Daniel carrying a sleeping Meadow toward the van.
Claire remembered that day as a blur of panic. Meadow disappeared for twenty-three minutes. The family searched the park until Daniel emerged from a wooded path carrying her. He said she had wandered away and fallen asleep beneath a tree.
Meadow had no memory of leaving the picnic blanket.
Medical records from the following week noted unusual fatigue and a puncture mark on her arm. Daniel told the pediatrician it was an insect bite.
Reed reopened the incident as a possible abduction and drugging.
When questioned, Daniel asked for immunity before speaking. Prosecutors refused full immunity but offered to consider cooperation.
Daniel finally admitted Walter had ordered a test.
The test involved separating Meadow from Claire in a crowded place and observing how quickly Claire became distressed. Marian wanted baseline footage of Claire's panic response. David had been assigned to watch Meadow in the van after she was given a sedative hidden in juice.
"You drugged your own child for an experiment?" Reed asked.
Daniel cried during the interview.
Claire felt nothing when she heard that.
He claimed David had opposed the plan and returned Meadow sooner than Walter instructed. Afterward, David kept one sneaker as proof. Walter punished him and restricted his movement.
"Where is David now?" Reed asked.
Daniel shook his head. "He contacts us when my father allows it."
"Did he set the fire?"
"My father told him to scare Claire, not hurt anyone."
"And the break-in?"
"Probably."
"Where is Walter?"
Daniel stared at the table.
"There is a house under the old North County juvenile hospital. My father used records from the closed residence to create identities there."
Police raided the abandoned hospital before dawn.
They found underground rooms, surveillance equipment, financial files, and evidence that Marian had stayed there recently.
They did not find Walter.
They did find David.

On the wall, he had written Meadow's name forty-seven times.
