Chapter 18 - Daniel's Last Lie

Daniel Carter was transferred from county detention to federal custody before noon.
Claire did not attend the interview.
She wanted to.
Every part of her wanted to sit across from him and place the photograph between them.
Two babies.
Two bassinets.
One husband who had lied.
But Priya persuaded her to remain with Meadow while agents questioned him first.
Daniel lasted eleven minutes.
Then he asked for Claire.
She refused.
He asked again.
She refused again.
At forty-three minutes, Daniel admitted there had been a second infant.
Claire received the news in a conference room.
She did not react immediately.
Priya sat opposite her.
"He says the second baby was born seven minutes after Meadow."
Claire stared at the table.
"Name?"
"He says you never named her."
"That's not what I asked."
Priya hesitated.
"Marian called her Wren."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Why?"
"Daniel claims he doesn't know."
"Of course."
"He says Walter convinced the family the second child was medically unstable."
Claire opened her eyes.
"Was she?"
"No evidence of it."
"What did Daniel believe?"
"That she had neurological abnormalities."
"Based on what?"
"A physician connected to Family Renewal Partners."
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"Dr. Kline?"
"Not directly. Someone named Dr. Adrian Voss."
Claire had never heard the name.
Priya continued.
"Voss signed an assessment claiming Newborn B showed markers for severe developmental impairment and would likely require institutional care."
"Seven minutes old?"
"Yes."
Claire stared at her.
"And Daniel believed that?"
"At first."
"At first."
Priya was silent.
Claire stood.
"When did he stop believing it?"
"Within two days."
The room seemed to tilt.
"Two days."
"Daniel says he saw the baby before she was transferred. She was alert. Feeding normally. No obvious distress."
"And he let them take her."
"Yes."
Claire walked to the window.
Cars moved far below.
People crossed the street carrying coffee.
The ordinary world continued.
"Why?"
Priya answered quietly.
"Judith told him the trust could not be divided."
Claire turned.
"What?"
"The Carter family trust had a succession clause. If Daniel had two surviving biological children, both would eventually obtain equal beneficiary rights."
Claire stared.
"Money."
"Partly."
"Partly?"
"Family Renewal had another interest."
Claire waited.
"They were running long-term comparative behavioral studies."
Claire's skin went cold.
Priya opened a folder.
"They called it the Mirror Cohort."
Claire did not sit.
"Explain."
"Pairs of siblings. Twins when available. Raised under different conditions. One remained inside the biological family. The other was placed in a controlled environment."
Claire felt nauseated.
"Children were experiments."
"Yes."
"And Meadow and Wren?"
"We believe they were one pair."
Claire looked toward the hallway where Meadow sat with Leah.
"Why would Judith agree to that?"
"Daniel says Walter told her it would preserve the family assets and provide valuable research."
"That's insane."
"It is."
"And Marian?"
"Daniel claims Marian became attached to Wren."
Claire remembered the red sweater.
The accidental name.
The room at Lake Rowan.
"She brought them together."
"Possibly."
"When?"
"We don't know."
Claire turned back.
"I want to hear Daniel say it."
Priya studied her.
"You don't owe him that."
"This isn't for him."
An hour later, Claire entered the secure interview room.
Daniel looked thinner.
His wrists were cuffed to the table.
For the first time since the trial, Claire felt no anger.
Only distance.
She placed a copy of the photograph between them.
Daniel looked down.
His face changed.
"That's her."
Claire sat.
"You knew."
He nodded.
"For nine years."
His eyes filled.
Claire felt nothing.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel swallowed.
"Your labor became complicated after Meadow was born."
"I know."
"They said there was another baby."
"You mean our daughter."
He flinched.
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"My mother and Walter were already at the hospital."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at the table.
"They knew there were twins."
Claire's hand tightened.
"Before I did?"
"Yes."
"Before I gave birth?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Ultrasound records."
Claire stared.
"My obstetrician told me there was one baby."
"They changed the report."
"Who?"
"I don't know everyone."
"Stop saying you don't know."
"I don't."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"Walter arranged it."
Claire leaned closer.
"What did you do?"
"They told me the second baby was sick. They showed me scans. Records. Voss said she might never speak, never live independently."
"And you believed them."
"For one night."
"And the next?"
"I went to see her."
He looked at the photograph.
"She grabbed my finger."
Claire's throat tightened.
Daniel began crying.
She did not comfort him.
"Then what?"
"I knew they'd lied."
"And you brought her back?"
He shook his head.
"Why?"
"My mother said if I exposed it, they'd say you were unstable. That you'd signed the transfer. They had documents."
"Forged documents."
"Yes."
"You knew that?"
"Yes."
"And still you let them take her."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Claire sat back.
"Where?"
"At first, a private residence in Maryland."
"Then?"
"Lake Rowan."
"Then?"
"I don't know."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Walter moved her when she was seven."
"Why?"
"Because Marian kept bringing Meadow to see her."
Claire's heart stopped.
"How many times?"
"I found out about three visits."
"Did Meadow know?"
"No. They drugged her afterward."
Claire stood so fast the chair hit the wall.
Daniel recoiled.
"You drugged my daughter?"
"I didn't."
"You knew."
"Not until later."
"You always know later."
Claire's voice trembled with fury.
"You know after the baby is gone. You know after Meadow is hurt. You know after the money is stolen. You know after every door closes."
Daniel was sobbing now.
Claire leaned over the table.
"Where is Wren?"
"I don't know."
"Who does?"
"Walter."
"Who else?"
Daniel hesitated.
Claire saw it.
"Who?"
"Marian."
"She's in custody."
"The Marian you arrested is in custody."
Claire froze.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"Marian had a sister."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Identical?"
"Yes."
"Name?"
Daniel whispered:
"Margaret."
Claire stared.
"Where is she?"
"I thought she died twenty years ago."
"Thought?"
"My mother told me she died."
Claire remembered the woman in the car.
The same face.
The deliberate turn toward the camera.
"She didn't."
"No."
"Why would Margaret help Walter?"
Daniel's expression changed.
For the first time, fear replaced shame.
"Because Walter didn't build Family Renewal."
Claire waited.
"He inherited it."
"From whom?"
May you like
Daniel looked at her.
"Margaret Vale."
