Chapter 23 - The Twin Who Remembered Too Much

Meadow asked to hear the truth.
All of it.
Claire resisted for two days.
Dr. Singh did not push either way.
Finally, Meadow said:
"You keep telling me adults made choices and children deserve the truth. Does that stop when the truth is scary?"
Claire had no answer.
So they told her.
Not every detail.
Not the most graphic parts.
But enough.
Wren was her twin.
They had been separated after birth.
Family Renewal had moved them between environments.
Wren had been taught Claire chose Meadow.
Wren had been taught Meadow knowingly benefited from her disappearance.
Meadow listened silently.
Then asked one question.
"Does Wren think I knew?"
"Yes."
Meadow's eyes filled.
"But I didn't."
"I know."
"How do we prove it?"
Claire looked at Priya.
Priya said, "We may have video."
The birthday footage.
The memory gaps.
Medical records.
Meadow's own therapy notes documenting confusion.
Enough to show she had been manipulated too.
Meadow wiped her eyes.
"Then send it to her."
"We don't know where she is."
"She sent us a video."
"Someone sent it."
"Then send one back."
Claire hesitated.
Priya considered it.
"We could release a controlled message through channels Walter is monitoring."
Claire immediately understood the risk.
"They'll see it."
"Yes."
"Could it endanger her?"
"Possibly."
Meadow looked from one adult to another.
"What if I choose?"
Claire's heart tightened.
"Choose what?"
"Whether I want to say something."
Claire knelt beside her.
"You don't have to fix this."
"I'm not fixing it."
Meadow looked toward the photograph of Wren.
"I'm telling my sister she was lied to."
The video was recorded in Priya's office.
No identifying location.
No references to Claire's home.
Meadow sat alone against a plain wall.
She refused a script.
The camera began.
For several seconds she said nothing.
Then:
"Hi, Wren."
She swallowed.
"My name is Meadow."
Pause.
"I don't know if that's the name I was born with. Maybe you don't know yours either."
Claire watched from behind the glass.
Meadow continued.
"I didn't know you existed."
Her voice trembled.
"I didn't choose Mom instead of you."
She breathed in.
"I didn't choose your room. Your clothes. Your birthday. I didn't know they were yours."
Another pause.
"If they told you I stole your life, they lied."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I think they stole both of ours."
Claire covered her mouth.
Meadow looked directly into the lens.
"I don't need you to love me."
Her voice broke.
"I just don't want you to hate yourself because of something they did."
Silence.
Then:
"And if you don't want to meet me, I will still tell the truth about you."
She reached toward the camera.
Priya stopped recording.
No one spoke for several seconds.
The video was released through a channel investigators knew Walter's network monitored.
Twenty-six hours passed.
Then an answer arrived.
Audio only.
Wren's voice.
"Meadow."
A long silence.
"I remember the birthday cake."
Meadow grabbed Claire's hand.
Wren continued.
"I remember your mother hugging me."
Claire began crying.
"I remember wanting her to know."
The recording crackled.
"But she didn't."
Claire closed her eyes.
Wren's breathing became audible.
"So I believed Margaret."
Another silence.
"Maybe I still do."
Then:
"I don't hate you."
Meadow started sobbing.
Claire held her.
Wren's voice softened.
"But I can't come home."
Meadow whispered, "Why?"
The recording answered.
"Because Walter has someone else."
Claire looked at Priya.
Wren continued.
"Someone he says Claire will trade both of us to get back."
The room went still.
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Who?"
The audio paused.
May you like
Then Wren spoke one name.
"Daniel."
