Chapter 32 - The Mothers Who Were Never Supposed to Meet

There were three women.

Caroline Bennett.

Evelyn Bennett.

And a third whose name had been erased from every digital record Priya could find.

The monastery archive referred to her only as MOTHER 3.

Claire stared at the designation.

"That's deliberate."

Priya nodded.

"Someone scrubbed her harder than the others."

"Why?"

"Either she was more important."

"Or more dangerous."

Reed looked at another file.

"Or still alive."

That possibility settled heavily over the room.

The Pair Zero notes were incomplete.

But fragments revealed enough.

Three infants.

One biologically related to Caroline.

One biologically related to Evelyn.

One biologically related to Mother 3.

Within weeks of birth, identities were altered.

Caregivers rotated.

Records changed.

Birth certificates sealed.

Children moved between homes.

The goal was monstrous in its simplicity:

Could a child be made to believe any mother was their mother?

Claire sat completely still.

Meadow stood in the doorway.

Claire had not heard her enter.

"That sounds like what they did to us."

Claire turned.

"Sweetheart—"

"They did it before."

"Yes."

"With you."

Claire hesitated.

"Maybe."

Meadow came closer.

"Then Pair Five wasn't new."

"No."

"It was a repeat."

Priya looked at the files.

"An improved version."

Claire hated the phrase.

But it was accurate.

Pair Zero had tested maternal identity.

Pair Five had tested sibling identity.

Pair Six had tested institutional identity.

Each generation widened the circle.

Meadow looked at Claire.

"Do you have sisters?"

Claire stared.

"I don't know."

"Three babies."

"Yes."

"What happened to the other two?"

No one could answer.

By noon, Croatian authorities confirmed House 317 existed.

Remote island property.

Privately owned through a trust.

Current beneficiary:

Caroline Bennett.

No listed residents.

No official utilities.

No recent immigration records attached to Caroline's name.

But thermal satellite imagery from two nights earlier showed heat signatures inside.

At least four people.

Claire looked at Priya.

"Wren."

"Possibly."

"And Caroline."

"Possibly."

"Who else?"

"We don't know."

Claire looked at Meadow.

Three mothers.

Three infants.

Three people inside House 317 besides Caroline?

The thought came before she could stop it.

"My sisters."

Priya did not dismiss it.

That frightened Claire.

A secure call arrived from Croatia.

Local police had sent officers toward the island.

They found the dock empty.

No boat.

No response from the house.

Then their drone feed cut out.

Ten minutes later, one officer called from a satellite phone.

"Do not approach the property."

Priya put the call on speaker.

"Why?"

"There are children inside."

Claire's heart jumped.

"How many?"

"At least six."

The room froze.

"Six?"

"We saw them through lower windows."

"What ages?"

"Different."

The officer paused.

"Some teenagers. Some younger."

Claire looked at Priya.

"Mirror Cohorts."

The officer continued.

"And one adult woman came outside."

"Description?"

"Approximately sixty-five. Gray hair."

Caroline.

"What did she say?"

The officer hesitated.

"She said if federal authorities enter, the children will disappear forever."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"Threat?"

"No."

The officer sounded confused.

"She said it as a warning."

"Against whom?"

"She wouldn't say."

Then a second voice appeared faintly in the background.

A girl.

Claire stopped breathing.

"Mom!"

Meadow stood.

"Wren?"

The connection crackled.

Claire moved closer to the speaker.

"Wren!"

The officer shouted.

Then the call died.

Meadow grabbed Claire's arm.

"That was her."

"Yes."

"She called you Mom."

Claire's throat tightened.

"Yes."

Priya immediately began coordinating.

But Claire could not stop thinking about the six children.

If Caroline had gathered survivors of earlier cohorts, House 317 was not merely a hideout.

It was an archive made of people.

That evening, a video arrived from an anonymous account.

Caroline sat at a wooden table.

Behind her stood Wren.

Alive.

Unrestrained.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

Caroline began.

"Claire."

"You have been told I am your mother."

"That is not exactly true."

Claire stared.

"Neither Evelyn nor I knew which child belonged to us by the end."

A photograph appeared.

Three infants.

Three women.

No labels.

"They rotated us."

Caroline continued.

"Then they altered our memories with drugs, sleep deprivation, false records, and staged reunions."

Claire felt sick.

"When the study ended, one woman accepted the child assigned to her."

"Evelyn."

"One woman refused."

Caroline touched her chest.

"And one woman disappeared."

Mother 3.

Caroline looked directly into the camera.

"Walter spent thirty years trying to find her."

Claire whispered:

"Why?"

Caroline answered.

"Because she stole the original Pair Zero files."

Behind her, Wren stepped forward.

"Mom."

Claire's eyes filled.

Wren continued.

"Caroline says she knows who you really are."

Pause.

"But she won't tell me."

Caroline turned toward Wren.

"Because the truth belongs to Claire first."

Then Caroline faced the camera.

"Come to House 317."

Claire expected another condition.

Come alone.

Bring Meadow.

Choose.

Instead Caroline said:

"Bring no children."

May you like

Claire stared.

"For once, let the adults carry the truth."
