Chapter 17 - The Second Bed at Lake Rowan

At dawn, federal agents entered Lake Rowan for the second time.
The house had been empty for months.
Its windows were boarded.
The kitchen cabinets had been removed during the first evidence seizure.
Every visible document had been cataloged.
Every room photographed.
Every computer taken.
But the first team had searched for financial records, surveillance equipment, restraints, drugs, and hidden cameras.
They had not searched for a second child.
That changed everything.
Claire refused to let Meadow return to the property.
Instead, she sat in the federal command van half a mile away with Leah while Priya, Morales, structural engineers, and a forensic excavation team entered the basement.
Reed stayed beside Claire.
The video feed showed gray concrete walls.
A narrow utility room.
The place where Meadow remembered two beds was now empty.
Priya's voice came through the speaker.
"We found repainting."
Claire leaned toward the monitor.
"What kind?"
"A section of wall approximately eight feet wide was painted recently. Different composition."
An engineer moved a scanning device across the concrete.
A second agent pointed toward a reading.
"There's space behind it."
Claire's mouth went dry.
The team began removing the false wall.
Concrete dust drifted through the beam of their lights.
Behind it was not a room.
It was a corridor.
Narrow.
Windowless.
Long enough that the camera light disappeared before reaching the end.
Leah whispered, "My God."
The agents entered.
Ten feet in, they found the first door.
Inside was a child's bedroom.
Faded yellow walls.
A narrow mattress.
Shelves containing children's books published eight to ten years earlier.
A plastic cup.
A night-light shaped like a moon.
And on the wall—
drawings.
Dozens of them.
Claire stood.
Most were simple.
Trees.
Houses.
Stick figures.
A lake.
But several showed two girls.
The girls had matching brown hair.
One wore green.
One wore blue.
Above them were letters drawn in uneven child's handwriting.
M.
W.
Claire pressed a fist against her mouth.
Priya's voice came from the speaker.
"Claire, we're collecting everything."
The camera moved closer to one drawing.
Two girls stood beneath a black roof.
A woman with gray hair stood between them.
Above the woman was a word.
GRANDMA.
Beside the house, another figure had been drawn in black.
Tall.
No face.
Only a red square in one hand.
Walter.
Or someone Meadow had learned to fear in the same shape.
An agent opened a small wardrobe.
Inside were children's clothes.
Many still had tags.
Others had handwritten initials.
W.V.
M.C.
Claire stared.
Wren Vale.
Meadow Carter.
The initials were not proof.
But they were enough to make her knees weak.
Then the team found the photographs.
A sealed envelope had been taped beneath the bed frame.
Inside were twelve Polaroids.
The first showed infant Meadow.
Or a child who looked like Meadow.
The second showed two newborn girls wrapped in matching hospital blankets.
Claire stopped breathing.
Reed moved beside her.
"Can you zoom in?"
The technician enlarged the image.
Two babies.
Two hospital identification bands.
The writing was too small to read.
Priya said, "We'll enhance it at the lab."
The third photograph showed Judith holding both babies.
Claire stared at the image until the room blurred.
"No."
Leah touched her shoulder.
Claire pulled away.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"Judith was never at the hospital."
Reed looked at her.
"You're sure?"
"Daniel said she arrived the next day."
The fourth photograph showed Marian holding one infant near a window.
The fifth showed Walter beside a bassinet.
The sixth showed Daniel.
Claire's world stopped.
Daniel looked younger.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
But unmistakably Daniel.
He was holding one baby.
Another lay in the bassinet behind him.
Claire whispered:
"He knew."
Reed said nothing.
She pointed at the screen.
"He knew there were two."
Priya's voice came through the speaker.
"Claire, we don't know when that photograph was taken."
"He knew."
"We need context."
"He confessed to everything except this."
Claire's hands shook.
"Why?"
No one answered.
The next photograph showed the two infants again.
One wore a pink hospital cap.
The other wore white.
A handwritten date appeared in the corner.
Nine years earlier.
Meadow's birthday.
Claire sat down abruptly.
Leah caught her elbow.
"I gave birth to two babies."
"We don't know that yet."
"I gave birth to two babies."
She remembered contractions.
Medication.
Bright lights.
A nurse telling her she was bleeding more than expected.
Then darkness.
She had awakened nearly three hours later.
Daniel had been sitting beside her.
One baby slept against his chest.
He told her Meadow was perfect.
He told her everything was okay.
Claire had believed him because she had survived and because a newborn daughter was sleeping in front of her.
She had never asked what happened during the hours she could not remember.
At the end of the corridor, the agents discovered another locked room.
The door had been reinforced from the outside.
Priya ordered photographs before entry.
Inside they found no furniture.
Only a metal table.
A drain.
A cabinet.
And a wall covered in height measurements.
Dates ran vertically beside pencil marks.
W - AGE 4.
W - AGE 5.
W - AGE 6.
W - AGE 7.
Then nothing.
Claire's breath caught.
Wren had been there for years.
Not weeks.
Not months.
Years.
A final mark appeared near the bottom.
W - TRANSFER.
No destination.
No date.
Underneath it, someone had later scratched four letters into the wall.
HELP.
Meadow's voice suddenly came from behind Claire.
"I knew it."
Claire spun around.
Meadow stood in the van doorway.
Leah stared at her.
"I thought you were sleeping."
"I woke up."
Claire turned off the monitor.
"Meadow—"
"I knew she was real."
Her daughter did not cry.
That frightened Claire more.
"I knew I heard her."
Claire wrapped both arms around her.
"You were a child. You couldn't have known."
"I left her there."
"No."
"I opened the door and then Grandma came and dragged me upstairs."
"Meadow, listen to me."
Claire held her face gently.
"You were four."
"But she was four too."
The words broke something in the room.
Claire pulled her close.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Then Priya's voice returned through the speaker.
"We found something else."
Claire looked up.
Priya stood at the far end of the hidden corridor.
In her hand was a small metal plate removed from the wall.
On it was a faded hospital barcode.

And one line of printed text.
NEWBORN B - CARTER.
