Chapter 31 - The Girl Who Left Her Bracelet Behind

Wren had not been taken.

That was the first thing Priya established.

No signs of struggle.

No forced door.

No sedative residue on the bracelet.

Security footage from the hallway showed Wren walking toward the stairwell alone thirty-seven seconds before the lights failed.

Claire watched the recording twice.

Then stopped.

"She planned it."

Priya nodded.

"At least part of it."

Meadow stood beside Claire.

Her face was pale.

"She told us not to follow."

Claire looked at her.

"That doesn't mean we're abandoning her."

"I know."

Meadow rubbed her thumb across the edge of Wren's bracelet, now sealed inside an evidence bag.

"But she left this."

Dr. Singh sat nearby.

"What does that mean to you?"

Meadow shrugged.

"Maybe nothing."

Then:

"Maybe she wanted me to find it."

Priya turned toward the security timeline.

Wren had received no visible phone.

No tablet.

No note.

Yet she knew the power failure was coming.

That meant someone had contacted her before Daniel entered the hallway.

Or Wren had known the plan much earlier.

Claire thought of the handwritten warning.

I KNOW WHO CAROLINE IS.

I KNOW WHY SHE WANTS YOU.

PLEASE DON'T FOLLOW ME.

"She didn't just recognize Caroline from one meeting," Claire said.

Priya looked at her.

"You think she's been in contact with her."

"Yes."

Reed nodded slowly.

"Would explain why she reacted so quickly to the photograph."

Meadow looked between them.

"Why wouldn't she tell us?"

Claire answered quietly.

"Because she's been taught that information is dangerous."

Meadow lowered her eyes.

"Or because she doesn't trust us."

Claire did not correct her.

At 3:10 a.m., federal technicians recovered a hidden Bluetooth transmitter from Wren's shoe.

Tiny.

Custom-built.

Dormant until activated.

Priya stared at the device beneath a magnifier.

"This was sewn into the lining."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Wren knew?"

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"It could have been placed without her knowledge."

Meadow shook her head.

"She knew."

Everyone turned.

"Why?"

"She kept touching her shoe."

Meadow demonstrated.

"Every time the adults talked about moving her somewhere else."

Dr. Singh looked at Claire.

Self-soothing.

Or checking a device.

Maybe both.

The transmitter contained one cached message.

A series of numbers.

44.9518

14.2417

Coordinates.

Croatia.

Claire stared at them.

House 317.

Priya said, "We're contacting Croatian authorities."

Claire looked at her.

"I'm going."

"No."

"She's my daughter."

"So is Meadow."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"I'm not leaving Meadow."

"Then you're not going."

Meadow interrupted.

"Why can't we all go?"

Claire turned.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because this is dangerous."

"So is staying here."

The words landed hard.

Meadow continued.

"They found Dad in federal custody."

"They broke into this building."

"They always know where we are."

Her voice shook.

"Maybe Wren is right."

"About what?"

"Maybe running toward the thing is safer than waiting for it to find us."

Claire knelt in front of her.

"That's not your job."

"I know."

"Then let me do mine."

Meadow looked away.

Claire took her hands.

"My job is not to chase every threat."

"It is to keep you alive long enough for you to decide who you are when none of these people are standing over you."

Meadow's eyes filled.

"Even Wren?"

Claire swallowed.

"Even Wren."

At sunrise, Daniel requested Claire.

She almost refused.

Then Priya said he had information about House 317.

Claire went.

Daniel sat behind glass again.

His face was gray with exhaustion.

"Why did you leave custody?"

"I didn't."

Claire stared.

"You walked into our hallway."

"I was brought upstairs by two agents."

"Names?"

"I didn't know them."

"Then why did you go?"

"They said Meadow had been hurt."

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

Another manufactured choice.

"You should have known better."

"Yes."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"I should have."

Claire sat.

"House 317."

Daniel's expression changed.

"My mother mentioned it once."

"Judith?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"After the twins were born."

Claire leaned closer.

"What did she say?"

"She said if the arrangement ever failed, we would have to go back to the first house."

"The first house."

"That's what she called it."

"Did she mean Croatia?"

"I didn't know."

"Who owned it?"

"Caroline."

Claire went still.

"She knew Caroline?"

Daniel nodded.

"My mother hated her."

"Why?"

"Because Caroline tried to stop Margaret."

Claire felt her pulse rise.

"Stop what?"

"Pair Zero."

Claire stared.

"You knew about Pair Zero?"

"No. Not then."

"Don't do this again."

"I swear."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I only understood after Walter took me."

Claire said nothing.

"He showed me files."

"What files?"

"Your family."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Claire, Pair Zero wasn't about you having a twin."

Claire froze.

"What was it about?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Three infants."

"I know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Not triplets."

Claire felt cold.

"Then what?"

"Three infants from three different mothers."

Silence.

"Explain."

"They were placed into one family system."

Claire stared.

"Why?"

"To test whether identity could be transferred across bloodlines."

The room seemed suddenly too small.

"Which infant was I?"

Daniel's eyes filled with fear.

"I don't know."

"Who does?"

"Caroline."

Claire stood.

Daniel spoke quickly.

"There's something else."

She stopped.

"House 317 wasn't just a residence."

"What was it?"

Daniel looked toward the guard.

May you like

Then back at Claire.

"It was where they kept the original mothers."
