Chapter 25 - The Father Meadow Never Knew

There was another father.

Not biological.

Not legal.

Not adoptive.

A man Family Renewal called a paternal alternative.

His name was Thomas Reed Vale.

No relation to Reed.

No relation to Margaret by blood despite the surname attached to his identity.

The name had been manufactured.

Thomas had spent nearly six years caring for Wren.

He had been told she was abandoned.

Wren had been told he was her father.

Then Walter removed him.

Priya found him in a sealed protective-custody file under another name.

Alive.

Living in Oregon.

Claire stared at his photograph.

Late forties.

Brown hair turning gray.

Gentle expression.

A scar above one eyebrow.

"Why would Walter care whether he lives?"

Priya answered.

"Because Thomas knows where some of the children went."

"What children?"

"The closed Mirror Cohorts."

Claire looked at the list.

Pairs 01 through 04.

"How many?"

"Potentially dozens."

"And Walter has Thomas?"

"No."

Claire understood.

"Margaret."

Priya nodded.

"Walter has Daniel. Margaret has Thomas."

"And they want Meadow to choose between them."

Reed paced slowly.

"Why Meadow?"

Dr. Singh, who had been listening quietly, spoke.

"Because choice is the experiment."

Everyone turned.

She pointed toward the Family Renewal notes.

"The system keeps forcing children into moral decisions created by adults."

She looked at Claire.

"Who do you love more? Which parent do you trust? Which sibling belongs? Which identity is real?"

Claire's stomach tightened.

"They manufacture impossible choices."

"Yes."

"And then treat the response as evidence."

Dr. Singh nodded.

"Meadow refusing to choose would disrupt the framework."

Claire looked at her daughter through the observation glass.

Meadow was drawing.

Two birds on opposite sides of a tree.

"What happens if she refuses?"

"We don't know."

Walter answered that question himself.

A video arrived that evening.

Daniel sat bound beneath a hanging light.

Walter stood behind him.

"Claire."

His voice was calm.

"This has never been about punishment."

Claire almost laughed.

Walter continued.

"It is about truth under pressure."

He placed one hand on Daniel's shoulder.

"Your daughter believes adults make choices."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"Now she will make one."

The camera shifted.

Another screen appeared beside Daniel.

Thomas.

Alive.

Sitting in another location.

Walter had obtained a live feed of Margaret's prisoner.

"Two fathers shaped Pair Five."

Claire felt sick.

"One through blood."

Walter touched Daniel.

"One through attachment."

He pointed toward Thomas.

"Meadow may save one."

Walter smiled.

"She has forty-eight hours."

The video ended.

Meadow had not seen it.

Claire intended to keep it that way.

Then Priya received a message.

Not from Walter.

From Wren.

LET ME TALK TO MEADOW.

Claire hesitated.

Meadow did not.

"Yes."

The call was audio only.

Priya traced it while the girls spoke.

"Wren?"

"Hi."

Their voices were almost identical.

Claire had to look at Meadow to remember which one was speaking.

Meadow asked, "Are you okay?"

"I don't know."

"Where are you?"

"I can't say."

"Is Margaret with you?"

Silence.

Then:

"Not now."

Claire and Priya exchanged a glance.

Wren was alone.

Or pretending to be.

Meadow said, "Walter wants me to choose who lives."

"I know."

"I'm not doing it."

Wren's breath caught.

"He'll hurt them."

"Maybe."

"Thomas raised me."

Meadow looked at Claire.

"And Daniel is my dad."

Wren's voice hardened.

"He gave me away."

"Yes."

"You still care if he dies?"

Meadow thought.

"I care if somebody kills him."

Silence.

"That's different."

Wren began crying quietly.

"I don't know how to do that."

"Do what?"

"Care about someone without belonging to them."

Meadow's face crumpled.

"You don't have to belong to anyone."

Wren whispered:

"Margaret says everybody belongs somewhere."

Meadow looked toward Claire.

Then back at the phone.

"Mom says people belong to themselves first."

Claire closed her eyes.

On the other end, Wren said nothing for a long time.

Then:

"Meadow?"

"Yeah?"

"I know where Walter is."

Priya immediately leaned forward.

"Where?"

Wren ignored the adult voice.

"I'll tell you."

Meadow swallowed.

"Okay."

"But only if you promise something."

"What?"

"If they find me..."

Wren's voice shook.

"Don't let them make me live with Claire."

Claire felt the words like a physical blow.

Meadow looked at her mother.

Then answered her sister.

"Okay."

Claire did not object.

Because for the first time, she understood what loving Wren might require.

Not bringing her home.

Not being called Mom.

May you like

Not being forgiven.

Just making sure she was free enough to decide.
