Chapter 9 - The Name Rachel Refused to Say)

The file was corrupted after the final sentence.

Molina's digital team recovered fragments.

No additional name.

No face.

No clue.

Only Rachel's warning.

Someone Lucas trusted.

For twenty four hours, Lucas suspected everyone.

Ryan.

Daniel.

Caroline's husband.

Former employees.

Friends.

Doctors.

Business partners.

People who had stood beside Rachel's grave.

The suspicion poisoned every memory.

Daniel noticed.

"You need to stop."

"Rachel said I trusted the person."

"Four years ago."

"That doesn't make the person harmless now."

"No. But paranoia will isolate you."

Lucas looked at him.

"You're someone I trust."

Daniel did not flinch.

"Then investigate me."

The answer stopped Lucas.

Daniel slid his phone across the desk.

"Take it. Bank records too. Professional history. Ask Molina."

"Daniel."

"I'm serious."

Lucas pushed the phone back.

Daniel said, "Whoever Rachel meant benefited from her silence."

Lucas looked at the evidence.

"Vale benefited."

"But she said someone behind him."

"Maybe someone at Wynn."

"Maybe."

Mara Bennett called again that afternoon.

This time Lucas recorded it with Molina listening.

"You found the box," Mara said.

"Yes."

"You know who I am."

"I know who Rachel believed you were."

"She was right."

"Where are you?"

"Not safe enough to tell you."

"Rachel said you were the person I should find."

Silence.

"Rachel shouldn't have involved you."

"She didn't. Vale did."

Mara sighed.

"Thomas thinks Emily inherited Rachel's claim."

"He's wrong."

"Now he knows."

Lucas stiffened.

"How?"

"Because someone accessed the bank vault log."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"You seem to know a lot for someone who won't show her face."

Mara's tone changed.

"Do you want help or not?"

"I want truth."

"Then stop protecting Vanessa."

Lucas glanced toward Molina.

"What does Vanessa have to do with you?"

"Her father helped Vale steal from my trust."

"Rachel's letter said that."

"Her father did more than paperwork."

"What?"

"He arranged the 1998 settlement."

Lucas waited.

Mara continued.

"My mother was in the building when it collapsed because she was meeting Arthur Wynn."

"Why?"

"To tell him she was pregnant."

Lucas looked at the birth certificate again.

"So the accident..."

"Wasn't random."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying five people died because Wynn executives ignored structural warnings to keep construction on schedule. My mother survived. Arthur paid her privately because a public paternity case would expose why she was there."

"And the trust?"

"His guilt."

"Or protection."

"Both."

"Why does Vale care?"

"Because the trust became worth more than anyone expected."

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"Millions?"

Mara laughed bitterly.

"Try hundreds."

Lucas closed his eyes.

Hundreds of millions.

Now the forged guardianship petition made terrifying sense.

"If Vale convinced a court Emily was the heir..."

"He could manage the trust as successor trustee."

"While controlling the person he claimed was beneficiary."

"Exactly."

"Why not just identify you?"

"Because I disappeared."

"How?"

"Rachel helped me."

Lucas looked at Rachel's photograph.

"When?"

"Six weeks before she died."

"What did she do?"

"She obtained evidence Thomas had falsified trust distributions. She told me if I stayed visible, he'd keep trying to control me."

"So you vanished."

"Yes."

"And Rachel died."

Silence.

"Mara?"

Her voice returned softer.

"I've spent four years wondering whether she died because of me."

Lucas understood that guilt.

It was different from his, but just as heavy.

"Who was Rachel afraid of?"

"I don't know."

"She said someone behind Vale."

"I know."

"You saw the video?"

"Rachel told me before she recorded it."

"Did she give you a name?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because she wasn't sure."

Lucas clenched his jaw.

"Give me something."

Mara was silent for a long time.

Then:

"Rachel believed someone close to you gave Thomas information."

"What information?"

"Your schedules. Your house alarm. Emily's daycare. Rachel's movements."

Lucas felt sick.

"Who had access?"

"You tell me."

Many people.

But not many four years earlier.

Ryan had.

Caroline had.

Daniel had.

Rachel's assistant.

Lucas's business manager.

His household security company.

His therapist.

Then another thought.

"Dr. Morse."

"What?"

"My therapist."

Molina looked up.

Lucas remembered the mental health information in the petition.

If Vale had access to Morse now, had he also known him four years ago?

Molina investigated.

Dr. Evan Morse had no obvious connection to Vale.

Until financial records revealed a consulting firm that had paid Morse three times in the year Rachel died.

The consulting firm belonged to a Wynn subsidiary.

Lucas drove to Morse's office with Molina that evening.

The office was empty.

Morse's receptionist said he had left unexpectedly.

On his desk was a half finished cup of coffee.

His computer remained on.

His car was still in the garage.

Molina immediately called for additional officers.

They searched.

No Morse.

Then Lucas noticed a photograph on the wall.

A charity golf tournament from five years ago.

Morse stood in the second row.

Beside him stood Thomas Vale.

And on Vale's other side stood a man Lucas recognized instantly.

May you like

Ryan Mercer.

His best friend.
