Chapter 15 - The Man Outside the Gate)

Lucas did not sleep.

Not after Natalie Kerr's statement.

Not after police ended the interrogation before she explained further.

Not after Daniel reminded him that biology did not change six years of fatherhood.

Not after Caroline told him Rachel herself had written that Emily was his.

You are her father.

You were always her father.

Lucas knew that.

He believed it.

But somewhere between midnight and dawn, another fear replaced the first.

Why would Natalie reveal this now?

To hurt him?

To destabilize a custody case?

To distract from Vale?

Or because someone else was coming?

DNA testing could answer the biological question.

Lucas refused to rush.

Emily was not evidence.

She was not a trust.

She was not an heir.

She was a six year old girl who had spent the week asking why adults kept whispering.

Lucas took her home when Molina finally approved it.

Police remained outside.

The tracker was gone.

The house had been searched.

Every lock had been changed.

Emily ran straight to Rachel's library.

Lucas followed.

She looked at the painted stars.

"Can we leave Mommy's room like this?"

"Forever."

"Even if you get married someday?"

Lucas smiled.

"Especially then."

Emily thought about it.

"I don't want another wedding."

"Me either."

She climbed onto the sofa.

"Vanessa said sorry."

Lucas stiffened.

"When?"

"Aunt Caroline showed me her letter."

Lucas made a mental note to talk to Caroline.

"What did you think?"

Emily shrugged.

"I don't like her."

"You don't have to."

"Do I have to forgive her?"

"No."

Emily looked relieved.

"Okay."

That simple answer felt more important than any inheritance.

Lucas had spent too much of his life believing peace required forgetting what people had done.

Rachel had known better.

Truth first.

Then choice.

Mara's claim to the Bennett trust was filed under court protection.

Thomas Vale was formally removed as successor trustee.

Federal investigators froze several accounts.

Vanessa surrendered evidence and entered negotiations with prosecutors.

Ryan learned his mother, Elizabeth, was alive.

Police located her in Portugal under another name.

Their first video call lasted eleven minutes.

Ryan cried for ten of them.

Margaret remained missing.

Natalie remained in custody.

Vale remained somewhere beyond the reach of police.

The central pieces had moved.

But the board was not empty.

A week after the wedding that never happened, Lucas returned to Briarwood Hall.

He went alone.

The ballroom was empty.

Workers had removed the flowers.

The altar was gone.

One chandelier was being cleaned.

Lucas stood where Vanessa's envelope had fallen.

He remembered believing that moment destroyed his future.

Now he understood it had exposed a future built on lies before he stepped into it.

That was something.

Maybe enough.

The hotel manager approached.

"Mr. Hart?"

"Yes?"

"We found something during cleanup."

He handed Lucas a small white object.

Emily's flower basket.

Inside was a folded drawing.

Lucas smiled.

Emily had drawn three stick figures.

Herself.

Lucas.

Rachel beneath a blue star.

Then he noticed a fourth figure.

A man.

Standing far away.

Lucas turned the page over.

Emily had written one word in crooked pencil.

DANIEL.

Lucas frowned.

His attorney?

Why would she draw Daniel?

He called Emily.

"Sweetheart, I found your drawing."

"My wedding one?"

"Yes."

"Who is the man you drew?"

Silence.

"Emily?"

"The man who talked to me outside."

Lucas stopped walking.

"When?"

"Before Vanessa put me in the bathroom."

"What man?"

"The one who said his name was Daniel."

Lucas's heart started pounding.

"Uncle Daniel?"

"No."

A coldness moved through him.

"What did he look like?"

Emily thought.

"He had gray hair."

Lucas immediately called Molina.

The hotel reviewed exterior footage.

A man approached Emily near the garden entrance forty minutes before the ceremony.

Gray hair.

Tall.

Dark suit.

His face was partially turned away.

He knelt.

Spoke to Emily.

Handed her something.

Then left.

Lucas stared at the footage.

"That's not my attorney."

Molina froze the frame.

"Do you recognize him?"

"No."

They searched other cameras.

The man entered no vehicle.

He walked beyond the property.

Another camera captured his face more clearly.

Mara Bennett was brought in.

She saw the image.

Her expression changed instantly.

"Where did you get this?"

"The wedding."

Mara stepped closer to the screen.

"No."

"You know him."

Mara shook her head as if refusing reality.

"That's impossible."

Lucas grabbed the edge of the desk.

"Everyone keeps saying that before telling me someone dead is alive. Who is he?"

Mara looked at Lucas.

"Arthur Wynn."

Silence.

Lucas almost laughed.

"Arthur Wynn died three years ago."

"I attended his memorial."

"There was a body."

"Cremated before the service."

Molina stared at the photograph.

"If this is Arthur Wynn, why approach Emily?"

Lucas remembered Natalie's words.

Emily's biological father is still alive.

He felt sick.

"No."

Mara looked at him.

"What?"

Lucas shook his head.

"No."

He called Daniel Price.

His attorney answered immediately.

"Lucas?"

"I need Rachel's original prenatal records."

A pause.

"Why?"

"I need them."

"Lucas, what happened?"

"Can you get them?"

"Some. Why?"

Lucas looked at the frozen image of Arthur Wynn.

"Because Natalie said Emily's biological father is alive."

Daniel became silent.

Lucas continued.

"And a man who looks exactly like Arthur Wynn spoke to Emily at the wedding."

Daniel whispered something Lucas could not hear.

"What?"

No response.

"Daniel?"

Finally, Daniel said:

"Do not go home."

Lucas's body went rigid.

"Why?"

"Where is Emily?"

"With Caroline."

"Call her right now."

"Daniel, what do you know?"

"Call Caroline."

Lucas called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

He called Ryan.

Nothing.

Then the home security application sent an alert.

Front gate opened.

Lucas watched the live camera.

Caroline's car sat in the driveway.

The front door was open.

A man stood outside the gate.

Gray hair.

Dark jacket.

The same face from the wedding footage.

Arthur Wynn.

Or someone who looked exactly like him.

Lucas grabbed his keys.

Molina blocked him.

"You're not going alone."

"My daughter is there."

They drove with lights and sirens.

Lucas called Caroline repeatedly.

On the seventh attempt, she answered.

"Lucas."

"Where is Emily?"

Caroline sounded frightened.

"She's with me."

"Lock the doors."

"They're locked."

"Is there a man outside?"

Silence.

"Caroline."

"Yes."

Lucas gripped the phone.

"Do not let him inside."

"He isn't trying to come in."

"What is he doing?"

Caroline looked through the window.

"He's waiting."

"For what?"

"I don't know."

Then Emily's voice came through the phone.

"Daddy?"

"I'm coming."

"The man gave me something."

Lucas looked at Molina.

"What?"

"A letter."

His blood turned cold.

"Don't open it."

"I already did."

Lucas closed his eyes.

"What does it say?"

Emily sounded confused.

"It says it's from Mommy."

Lucas stopped breathing.

"Read only the first line."

Paper rustled.

Emily slowly sounded out the handwriting.

"Dear Emily, if Arthur comes to find you, it means Thomas finally discovered why I chose Lucas."

Lucas stared through the windshield.

Police vehicles raced toward his house.

"What else?"

Emily became quiet.

"Sweetheart?"

"There is a picture."

"Of what?"

"You."

Lucas frowned.

"Me?"

"No."

Emily's voice became smaller.

"A man who looks like you."

Lucas felt something inside him drop.

"Emily, listen to me. Put the letter down."

"But Daddy..."

"What?"

"The man outside says he knows him."

"Knows who?"

"The man in the picture."

Lucas could see his street ahead.

Police slowed.

The gate came into view.

Gray haired Arthur Wynn still stood outside.

He did not run.

He did not hide.

He simply turned as Lucas stepped from the vehicle.

For several seconds, the two men stared at one another.

Then Arthur Wynn reached slowly into his coat.

Officers raised their weapons.

"Hands!"

Arthur stopped.

He lifted an old photograph between two fingers.

Lucas recognized Rachel immediately.

Beside her stood a much younger man.

A man with Lucas's eyes.

Lucas's jaw.

Lucas's face.

Arthur called across the driveway.

"You want to know why Rachel chose you?"

Lucas said nothing.

Arthur looked toward the house where Emily waited.

"Because you were never a stranger to this family."

Lucas felt his pulse in his throat.

"Who is that man?"

Arthur smiled without warmth.

"The question isn't who he is."

He turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Arthur held it up.

"The question is why Rachel spent nine years making sure you never learned what happened to him."

Lucas took one step forward.

Arthur continued.

"And if you want the answer, you need to find Thomas Vale before Margaret does."

"Why?"

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in Arthur Wynn's eyes.

"Because Margaret isn't trying to expose Thomas anymore."

Lucas stared.

"What is she trying to do?"

Arthur looked beyond him.

Toward the end of the street.

A black vehicle had just turned the corner.

Arthur's face changed.

"Get Emily out of the house."

Lucas spun toward Molina.

"What?"

Arthur stepped backward.

"Now."

The black vehicle accelerated.

Police shouted.

Lucas heard tires scream.

Then a gunshot cracked somewhere beyond the houses.

Arthur dropped.

Lucas turned.

The photograph slipped from Arthur's fingers.

Molina pulled Lucas behind a vehicle as officers moved toward the street.

Caroline screamed through the phone.

"Lucas!"

"I'm here."

"The lights just went out."

Lucas looked toward his house.

Every window had gone dark.

"Take Emily upstairs."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Caroline's breathing became frantic.

"The back door is open."

Lucas froze.

"I locked it."

"So did I."

A sound came through the phone.

A floorboard creaking.

Then Emily whispered:

"Daddy?"

Lucas pressed the phone closer.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

"Grandma Margaret is inside."

Lucas stopped breathing.

Through the dark windows of his house, a shadow moved.

Caroline whispered:

"Lucas, she has something in her hand."

"What?"

Emily answered before Caroline could.

"The other blue box."

May you like

The call went dead.
