Chapter 13 - The Room Rachel Left Behind)

The key opened a locker.

Not a room.

At least not directly.

Margaret had given Emily enough clues to lead Lucas to an old train station storage facility near Rachel's childhood town.

Locker 18.

Inside was a wooden case.

The brass key opened it.

Inside were architectural plans.

A property deed.

And another recorded message from Rachel.

This video was longer.

Lucas watched with Molina, Daniel, Caroline, and Ryan.

Rachel appeared calmer than in the bank recording.

"If Emily remembered the stars and Margaret kept her promise, you found this."

Lucas whispered, "She knew Margaret was alive."

Rachel continued.

"Margaret is not my aunt."

Everyone looked at one another.

"Her real name is Margaret Bennett."

Mara.

Bennett.

Rachel continued.

"She is Marianne Bennett's older sister."

Daniel immediately understood.

"Mara's aunt."

Rachel nodded on the screen as if answering him across time.

"Margaret raised me because my biological mother worked for Arthur Wynn."

Lucas stopped.

Another secret.

Rachel's mother had supposedly died when Rachel was six.

Rachel continued.

"My mother discovered the 1998 construction warnings. When workers died, she tried to expose Wynn Development. Thomas Vale threatened her. Margaret helped my mother disappear for several years."

Lucas felt dizzy.

"Rachel's mother survived?"

Caroline whispered.

"Keep watching."

"My mother eventually died from an illness. That part of my story was true. But by then Margaret had become my guardian."

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

"Margaret spent years gathering evidence against Vale."

The screen changed.

Rachel held up the architectural plans.

"The property deed in this case belongs to a building in Albany. Margaret called it the room because it contains the physical archive no one could alter digitally."

Lucas examined the deed.

An old residential building.

Purchased through a trust.

Rachel continued.

"If you reach it, do not go alone."

Molina almost smiled.

"Finally, sensible advice."

Rachel's expression became serious.

"There is one more thing."

Everyone leaned closer.

"I was wrong about the person feeding Thomas information."

Lucas's pulse quickened.

"The source wasn't someone Lucas trusted."

He stared.

"It was someone I trusted."

Rachel took a breath.

"And that is why I never told Lucas."

The recording flickered.

But continued.

"Vanessa's father was involved in the settlement. After he died, Thomas took control of his files. Vanessa was a teenager when most of this happened. She knew pieces, not everything."

Vanessa had told the truth about that.

Rachel continued.

"Years later Vanessa contacted me."

Lucas stared.

This was new.

"She wanted answers about her father. I gave her some."

Rachel's expression tightened.

"Then she sold one of my documents to Thomas."

Lucas closed his eyes.

There it was.

The betrayal.

"She said she needed money for her mother. Maybe she did. But that document revealed I had found Mara."

Rachel looked away.

"I told Vanessa never to come near my family."

Lucas finally understood the courthouse photograph.

Vanessa had helped Rachel.

Then betrayed her.

Years later Vale sent Vanessa toward Lucas.

A perfect instrument built from guilt, debt, and ambition.

Rachel continued.

"But Vanessa is not the person I mean."

The room became silent.

"The person I trusted was Dr. Natalie Kerr."

Lucas stared at the screen.

Emily's therapist.

Rachel knew Natalie?

"Natalie and I were childhood friends."

Lucas whispered, "She never told me."

"After Margaret took me in, Natalie became the closest thing I had to a sister."

Rachel's eyes filled with sadness.

"I told her everything."

The video ended.

Lucas stood so quickly his chair fell.

Natalie.

The therapist who had worked with Emily for a year.

The woman who had told him Emily's anxiety was normal.

The woman who witnessed the forged guardianship petition.

The woman at the bathroom door.

Molina immediately contacted the team searching for her.

No location.

But now they knew what she represented.

Access.

Natalie knew Rachel's childhood.

She knew Lucas's grief.

She knew Emily's fears.

And because Lucas trusted her professionally, he had given her information voluntarily.

Daniel looked at the property plans.

"Rachel said the physical archive is here."

"Albany."

Molina shook her head.

"No one goes until we secure it."

They did.

The building appeared abandoned.

Police entered first.

The basement contained a steel door.

No handle.

No visible lock.

The architectural plans revealed a hidden mechanical release behind an electrical panel.

Inside was the room.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Original contracts.

And one desk.

On the desk sat a framed photograph.

Rachel and Natalie at seventeen.

Best friends.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Lucas recognized Natalie's handwriting from Emily's therapy worksheets.

It read:

May you like

Rachel lied to all of you.

Mara isn't Arthur Wynn's only daughter.
