Chapter 14 - The Second Daughter)

The room contained enough evidence to destroy Thomas Vale.
That was what Daniel said after two days of reviewing records.
Trust withdrawals.
Forged authorizations.
Shell companies.
Private correspondence showing Vale diverted millions from assets belonging to Mara Bennett.
More importantly, files connected Vale to attempts to suppress construction evidence after the 1998 collapse.
There was no direct proof he caused Rachel's death.
Not yet.
But there was enough to freeze his accounts.
Enough to remove him as trustee.
Enough to begin criminal investigations.
Vale disappeared before authorities could arrest him.
His home was empty.
Passport untouched.
Vehicles abandoned.
Someone had prepared another escape route.
Vanessa agreed to cooperate fully.
Her testimony confirmed Vale directed her to approach Lucas.
She admitted searching Rachel's office.
She admitted pressuring Emily.
She admitted locking her in the bathroom.
She admitted accepting the forged petition from Natalie even after suspecting it was illegal.
Lucas listened to her confession without interrupting.
When she finished, Vanessa cried.
"I'm sorry."
Lucas looked through the interview room glass toward Emily, who sat outside coloring with Caroline.
"You don't apologize to me first."
Vanessa nodded.
"I know."
"You don't get to ask Emily to forgive you."
"I know."
"You don't get to explain your intentions until she feels obligated to make you feel better."
Vanessa wiped her face.
"I understand."
Lucas stood.
"The wedding is gone. The relationship is gone. That part of my life is finished."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know."
He paused at the door.
"But helping police find Vale is the first decent decision you've made in a long time."
She looked at him.
It was not forgiveness.
Lucas made sure she understood that.
But it was truth.
Three days later, Mara Bennett finally appeared.
She walked into Molina's office wearing a baseball cap and plain jacket.
Lucas recognized her immediately from the security footage.
She was forty one.
Quiet.
Guarded.
When Emily entered with Caroline, Mara's composure broke.
She stared at the child.
"She looks like Rachel."
Lucas nodded.
"Sometimes."
Mara crouched.
"Hi, Emily."
Emily looked at Lucas before answering.
"Hi."
Mara did not touch her.
Did not ask for anything.
Rachel had chosen well.
Trust the person who asks you nothing about money.
Mara gave police testimony.
Rachel had helped her disappear after discovering Vale's theft.
Margaret had created false trails.
Natalie had initially helped too.
Then Natalie changed.
"Why?" Lucas asked.
Mara looked toward the archive photograph.
"Because Natalie found out who her father was."
Lucas went still.
"Arthur Wynn."
Mara nodded.
"Apparently."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Then the note in the archive was true."
"Yes."
Arthur Wynn had at least two daughters.
Mara.
And Natalie.
But their legal positions were different.
Mara was the beneficiary tied to the 1998 settlement trust.
Natalie was a potential direct heir to Wynn's estate.
"If Natalie proved paternity," Daniel said, "she could challenge portions of the estate."
"Why help Vale?"
Mara answered.
"Because he promised to help prove it."
Lucas understood.
Natalie had been Rachel's childhood friend.
Rachel trusted her.
Natalie learned she had a possible claim worth millions.
Vale offered access.
Evidence.
Recognition.
All he required was information.
"Did Natalie betray Rachel?"
Mara looked away.
"Yes."
"Did she cause Rachel's death?"
"I don't know."
"Who does?"
"Margaret."
"Where is Margaret?"
Mara shook her head.
"I haven't seen her in four years."
Lucas thought about Emily's school.
"She saw Emily last week."
Mara stared.
"What?"
Lucas explained.
Margaret had approached Emily before the wedding.
Warned her about Vanessa.
Given her the key.
Mara looked genuinely shaken.
"Margaret would never go near Emily unless she thought something was about to happen."
"The wedding."
"No."
Mara shook her head.
"Something bigger."
That evening police arrested Dr. Natalie Kerr.
She had been hiding in a motel outside Baltimore.
Lucas watched the interrogation remotely.
Natalie looked exhausted.
Molina placed the forged guardianship document in front of her.
"You witnessed this."
Natalie said nothing.
"You knew Lucas didn't sign it."
Silence.
"You helped Vanessa obtain Emily's signature."
Natalie looked toward the camera.
She knew Lucas was watching.
Finally she spoke.
"I was trying to protect Emily."
Lucas nearly shouted at the screen.
Molina remained calm.
"From whom?"
Natalie whispered:
"Her father."
Lucas froze.
Molina leaned forward.
"Lucas?"
Natalie smiled sadly.
"No."
She looked directly toward the camera.
"The man everyone thinks is her father."
Lucas felt the room tilt.
Mara stood.
Daniel whispered, "No."
Natalie continued.
"Rachel lied about one thing until the day she died."
Lucas could barely breathe.
May you like
Natalie said:
"Emily's biological father is still alive."
