Chapter 11 - The Woman Buried Under the Wrong Name)

Ryan sat down.

For the first time in fifteen years, Lucas saw his best friend completely speechless.

"My mother died."

Vanessa looked at him carefully.

"What happened?"

"Cancer."

"Did you see her body?"

Ryan stared.

"What kind of question is that?"

"Did you?"

Ryan's anger faded.

"No."

Lucas frowned.

"Ryan."

"She died in Switzerland."

"You told me Florida."

"I told people Florida because I didn't want to explain."

"Explain what?"

Ryan stood.

"My mother left when I was seventeen."

Lucas had never known.

Ryan paced.

"She remarried. Changed her name. Moved overseas. We barely spoke."

"But you said she died."

"Because my father called and told me."

"Did you verify it?"

"No."

Vanessa opened the ledger.

"Elizabeth Mercer received payments for years after that."

Molina took over.

"Those payments could belong to someone with the same name."

Vanessa shook her head.

"The account notation says EM-17."

Ryan stared.

"Seventeen was my mother's employee number."

"Employee where?"

Ryan looked at Lucas.

"Wynn Development."

The room became silent.

Lucas felt another piece move into place.

"What did she do?"

"Executive administration."

"For Arthur Wynn?"

Ryan nodded.

"Sometimes."

"Did Rachel know her?"

"I don't know."

"Did Vale?"

"Yes."

Lucas stared.

"You knew your mother worked with Vale?"

"No. I knew she worked at Wynn when I was a kid."

Molina asked, "What was her full name before Mercer?"

Ryan answered.

"Elizabeth Anne Doyle."

Molina searched.

Then looked up.

"There's no death certificate."

Ryan sat again.

Vanessa whispered, "Thomas told me Mercer was an information source."

Lucas looked at Ryan.

"About Rachel?"

"I don't know."

"Think."

Ryan buried his face in his hands.

"My mother contacted me once after she supposedly died."

Everyone stared.

"What?" Lucas asked.

"It was an email."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"After Rachel died."

"Yes."

"What did it say?"

"One sentence."

Ryan looked ashamed.

"She said, I'm sorry I couldn't protect her."

Lucas went cold.

"Protect who?"

"I assumed she meant herself. Or maybe me."

"You never told me?"

"I thought someone hacked her account."

"Do you still have it?"

"Yes."

Police retrieved the email.

Sent from an encrypted overseas service.

Attached was a photograph Ryan had never opened because he feared malware.

Digital specialists opened it safely.

The image showed Rachel.

Alive.

Standing beside Elizabeth Mercer.

Date metadata: eleven days before Rachel died.

Behind them was a storage facility.

Molina traced the sign.

Redwood Archive Services.

The company had closed three years earlier.

Its records were transferred to a warehouse in New Jersey.

By midnight, police obtained emergency access.

Rows of storage boxes filled the warehouse.

Elizabeth Mercer had rented unit C19 under an alias.

Inside were corporate records going back to 1997.

Construction inspection reports.

Trust correspondence.

Board minutes.

And one sealed package addressed to Ryan.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Ryan,

If you ever receive this, it means Thomas finally forced me to disappear completely.

You deserved the truth years ago.

I was one of the people who helped Arthur Wynn conceal the Bennett settlement.

I believed I was protecting the company.

Later I learned Thomas was stealing from the trust.

Rachel found me because she was looking for Mara.

I helped her.

That is why I vanished.

Ryan stopped reading.

Lucas watched him.

His friend looked sick.

The letter continued.

Rachel believed Thomas had someone close to Lucas feeding him information.

It was not you.

I investigated.

I found payments routed through a medical consultant.

Dr. Evan Morse.

But Morse was also being used.

The actual source was someone with unrestricted access to Lucas's household records.

Rachel intended to confront that person.

She never got the chance.

Lucas whispered, "Name."

Ryan turned the page.

The bottom half had been torn away.

"No."

He searched the envelope.

Nothing.

Molina inspected the ripped edge.

"Someone removed it."

Vanessa looked around the unit.

"Thomas."

"Maybe."

Lucas noticed a smaller envelope behind the documents.

No name.

Inside was a single photograph.

A Christmas dinner at Lucas's house.

Five years earlier.

Lucas.

Rachel.

Emily as a baby.

Caroline.

Ryan.

Daniel.

Several friends.

One person had been circled in red ink.

Lucas stared.

The circled person was not Ryan.

Not Daniel.

Not Dr. Morse.

It was Margaret Hale.

Rachel's aunt.

The woman who had raised Rachel after her parents died.

The woman everyone believed had died six months before Rachel.

Lucas whispered, "That's impossible."

Molina looked at him.

"Why?"

"Margaret is dead."

May you like

Ryan gave a bitter laugh.

"So was my mother."
