Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Rachel)

Lucas did not remember reaching Vale.

One second they were ten feet apart.

The next, Ryan had both hands against Lucas's chest.

"Lucas."

Vale remained unnervingly still.

"Don't give him what he wants," Ryan said.

"What does he want?"

"A reaction."

Lucas looked at Vale.

Ryan was right.

The man wanted anger.

Maybe he needed it.

The petition already described Lucas as emotionally unstable.

A public assault at his own wedding would fit perfectly.

Lucas stepped back.

Vale gave the faintest disappointed smile.

"Smart."

Lucas pointed toward the exit.

"Leave."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Lucas."

"Not you."

He kept his eyes on Vale.

"Security has your face. Cameras have your movements. If you've done something illegal, I'll find it."

Vale adjusted his cuff.

"You may discover that looking backward has consequences."

"Try me."

Vale walked out.

No one stopped him.

Lucas immediately turned to Ryan.

"Make sure the hotel preserves everything."

"Already requested."

"Call our attorney."

"Daniel?"

"Now."

Ryan moved away.

Guests began whispering again.

Lucas faced the room.

For a moment he felt absurdly aware of the flowers.

Thousands of dollars of white roses.

Champagne.

The orchestra.

The towering wedding cake.

He had spent months believing this room represented the beginning of a new family.

Now every decoration looked like scenery built around a trap.

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

"Private room."

She nodded.

"Lucas, I can explain everything."

"Good."

He took Emily from Caroline.

Vanessa looked at the child.

Emily immediately turned her face away.

Lucas saw it.

He would remember that longer than any document.

They moved into the bridal lounge.

Caroline and Ryan followed.

Vanessa's mother tried to enter.

Lucas closed the door before she could.

He sat Emily beside him on a sofa.

Vanessa remained standing.

"Start with Rachel."

Vanessa pressed both palms together.

"I knew her in college."

"You were in California."

"So was Rachel for one semester."

Lucas frowned.

Rachel had studied in Boston.

At least that was what he knew.

"Rachel never attended school in California."

"Not officially."

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa looked toward Emily.

Lucas understood.

"Caroline."

His sister nodded.

"Emily, let's find some cake."

Emily clung to Lucas again.

"I don't want cake."

"Then Aunt Caroline will sit outside with you. I'm right here."

Emily whispered, "Don't marry her."

Lucas felt the words like a knife.

He kissed her temple.

"I won't."

Vanessa recoiled.

Lucas did not look at her.

Caroline led Emily outside.

When the door closed, Lucas faced Vanessa.

"The wedding is over. That part is not negotiable. Now decide whether you're leaving this room after telling the truth or after lying again."

Vanessa sat.

"Rachel spent four months in California when she was twenty four."

"Why?"

"She was looking for someone."

"Who?"

"Her biological father."

Lucas stared.

Rachel's father had died when she was fifteen.

That was the story Rachel told.

Vanessa saw his disbelief.

"The man Rachel called her father wasn't biological."

Lucas shook his head.

"Rachel would have told me."

"Maybe eventually."

"We were married nine years."

"Then ask yourself why she didn't."

The answer hurt.

Lucas remembered Rachel as fiercely private about her childhood.

Her mother had died when she was young.

Her father supposedly died several years later.

After that she lived with an aunt.

Lucas had never pressed.

He had believed respecting pain meant not asking questions.

Vanessa continued.

"Rachel found Thomas Vale."

Lucas looked toward the door through which Vale had left.

"Vale was her father?"

"No."

Vanessa's answer came quickly.

"He worked for him."

"For who?"

"A man named Arthur Wynn."

Lucas knew the name.

Anyone involved in East Coast property development did.

Arthur Wynn had built hotels, marinas, retirement communities, and luxury residential projects across five states.

He had died three years earlier.

His family controlled a private company worth hundreds of millions.

Lucas whispered, "You're saying Arthur Wynn was Rachel's father?"

"I'm saying Rachel believed he might be."

"And you were involved how?"

"My father represented one of Wynn's companies."

"Your father died when you were nineteen."

"Which is why Thomas became close to my family."

Lucas leaned forward.

"Why were you in a photograph with Rachel?"

"Because I drove her to the courthouse."

"Why?"

"She needed access to sealed family records."

"And Vale?"

"He stopped her."

"Stopped her how?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Rachel found something she wasn't supposed to find."

Lucas almost laughed.

"What? A secret billionaire father?"

"No."

Vanessa looked back.

"Another child."

Lucas said nothing.

"Arthur Wynn supposedly had a daughter before his marriage. Rachel thought she was that daughter. She wasn't."

"Then who was?"

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I know Rachel discovered someone else existed."

"Name."

"She never told me."

"Why would Rachel trust you?"

"Because I helped her."

"Then why lie about knowing her?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because the last time I saw Rachel, she told me if I ever went near her family, she would destroy me."

Lucas stared.

"Why?"

Vanessa hesitated.

There it was again.

A missing piece.

Lucas stood.

"You're still lying."

"I'm not."

"Rachel didn't threaten people without a reason."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You didn't know every part of Rachel."

"I knew enough."

"No. You knew the version of Rachel who escaped."

Lucas stepped closer.

"Escaped what?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Someone knocked.

Ryan entered without waiting.

He held his phone.

"Lucas."

"What?"

"Hotel security found something."

Vanessa stood.

"What?"

Ryan looked at her.

"The camera outside the bathroom."

Lucas felt his heartbeat slow.

"What did it show?"

Ryan handed him the phone.

The security director had sent a still image.

Vanessa stood outside the bathroom door.

Emily was visible inside.

Vanessa's hand was on the key.

But someone else was standing beside her.

Dr. Natalie Kerr.

May you like

Emily's therapist.

And Natalie was holding the envelope that had later fallen from Vanessa's wedding dress.
