Chapter 4 - The Therapist at the Bathroom Door)

Natalie Kerr had disappeared.
Ryan called her office first.
No answer.
Then her cell.
Voicemail.
The hotel manager confirmed Natalie had entered the building forty minutes before the ceremony.
She was not on the guest list.
A valet remembered seeing her arrive in a gray sedan.
No one remembered seeing her leave.
Lucas watched the hallway footage three times.
There was no audio.
Only movement.
Natalie approached Vanessa near the bathroom.
They argued.
Emily stood nearby holding her flower basket.
Natalie showed Vanessa the envelope.
Vanessa grabbed it.
Natalie pointed toward Emily.
Vanessa opened the bathroom door.
Emily went inside.
Then Vanessa turned the key.
Lucas paused the recording.
"Why?"
Vanessa was sitting across the room.
Her mascara had begun to run.
"I wanted two minutes."
"Two minutes for what?"
"To talk to Natalie."
"So you locked Emily inside?"
"I didn't think she'd be scared."
Lucas stared at her.
"You locked my daughter alone in a bathroom during a wedding."
"I know."
"No. You know now because there were cameras."
Vanessa flinched.
He resumed the video.
Natalie and Vanessa argued for almost ninety seconds.
Then Natalie walked away.
Vanessa placed the envelope into a hidden opening in her dress.
"Why hide it?"
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
"Because I was going to destroy it."
Lucas almost laughed.
"Convenient."
"I'm telling you the truth."
"What's in the petition?"
"You read it."
"No. What was it supposed to accomplish?"
Vanessa looked at Ryan.
Ryan folded his arms.
She turned back to Lucas.
"Thomas told me it was leverage."
"Against whom?"
"Rachel's family."
Lucas's expression hardened.
"Emily is Rachel's family."
"I didn't understand that was how he intended to use it."
"Then what did you understand?"
Vanessa stared at her hands.
"Thomas told me Rachel left something behind."
"What?"
"I don't know."
"Money?"
"No."
"Property?"
"He said evidence."
"Evidence of what?"
"I don't know."
Lucas slammed his palm against the table.
"Stop saying you don't know."
Vanessa's voice broke.
"I don't know because Thomas never tells anyone everything."
"Then why work with him?"
"Because I owed him."
"For what?"
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
"My mother."
"What about her?"
"When my father died, he left debts. More than anyone knew. Thomas made them disappear."
"In exchange for?"
"Nothing at first."
Lucas laughed without humor.
"There is always an exchange."
"I learned that later."
The door opened.
Caroline stepped in.
"Emily is asleep."
Lucas looked at the clock.
The ceremony should have ended by now.
Instead, his daughter was asleep in a hotel office while his almost wife described being financially controlled by a man connected to his dead wife's past.
"What did Vale ask you to do?"
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"Get close to you."
The room went silent.
Lucas looked at her.
"Say that again."
"Thomas introduced us deliberately."
Their first meeting had been at a charity auction.
Vanessa spilled sparkling water on Lucas's jacket.
She laughed.
He laughed.
They talked until midnight.
He had told the story a hundred times as evidence that life could still surprise him.
Now it sounded engineered.
"You targeted me."
"At first."
"How long?"
"Three months."
Lucas's stomach turned.
"And after that?"
"I fell in love with you."
Ryan looked away.
Caroline did not.
Lucas simply stared.
Vanessa continued.
"I was supposed to find out whether Rachel left you documents."
"What documents?"
"Something connected to the Wynn estate."
"Rachel never mentioned Arthur Wynn."
"Then she hid it."
"Where?"
"Thomas thought it was in your house."
Lucas remembered something.
Three weeks earlier, he had found Vanessa in Rachel's old office.
Vanessa claimed she was measuring the windows for renovation.
Lucas had thought nothing of it.
"You searched my home."
"Yes."
The admission hurt more than he expected.
His home.
Rachel's things.
Emily's childhood.
Every safe place had been entered under false pretenses.
"What did you find?"
"Nothing."
"Then why the guardianship petition?"
Vanessa began crying again.
"Thomas changed the plan."
"To what?"
"He said if we married, I would have easier access."
"To Emily?"
"To everything."
Lucas stood.
"So this wedding was part of it."
"It started that way."
"Stop telling me it changed."
"But it did."
"Emily was crying behind a locked door thirty minutes ago."
"I made a horrible decision."
"You made hundreds."
Vanessa had no answer.
Caroline's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
"Daniel."
Lucas took the call.
Daniel Price had been Lucas's attorney since Rachel died.
Lucas summarized the documents.
Daniel asked him to photograph every page and touch nothing unnecessarily.
Then Lucas mentioned Dr. Kerr.
Daniel became silent.
"Lucas."
"What?"
"I need you to listen carefully."
"Go ahead."
"Dr. Natalie Kerr called my office yesterday."
Lucas froze.
"Why?"
"She asked whether Rachel's estate file was still sealed."
Vanessa looked up.
Lucas put the phone on speaker.
Daniel continued.
"She specifically asked about a supplemental testament."
Lucas frowned.
"What is that?"
"A document Rachel signed shortly before her death."
"I've never heard of it."
"Neither had I."
"Then how did Natalie?"
Daniel paused.
"That's what worries me."
Lucas looked at Vanessa.
"What did Rachel leave?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know."
Daniel spoke again.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"After Natalie called, I checked the court archive."
Lucas waited.
"The supplemental testament was unsealed six days ago."
"By whom?"
"A judge authorized access after receiving proof that Rachel's daughter may be connected to an unresolved inheritance claim."
Lucas looked through the glass wall toward the hallway where Emily slept.
"Who filed the request?"
May you like
Daniel answered.
"Thomas Vale."
