Chapter 7 - Someone Had Been Following Emily)

Police arrived twenty minutes later.
The tracker was photographed, bagged, and removed.
Lucas answered questions.
When had he last checked the backpack?
Who had access?
Where had Emily been?
School.
Therapy.
Vanessa's house.
Wedding rehearsals.
The list became unbearable.
Emily sat in the kitchen eating cereal, unaware that adults were discussing how long someone might have been tracking her.
Detective Sarah Molina examined the blue box but did not take it.
"This started with a custody document at a wedding and now we have a tracker."
Lucas nodded.
"And a woman calling from an untraceable number."
"Probably internet routed."
"Can you find her?"
"We can try."
Molina looked at Rachel's letter.
"Thomas Vale."
"Yes."
"He's already lawyered up."
"He contacted you?"
"We contacted him."
"What did he say?"
"That he's a retired financial consultant who hasn't spoken to Vanessa in months."
Lucas laughed.
"There is video of him at my wedding last night."
"He says he attended as a family friend."
"Rachel named him in a letter written four years ago."
"I understand."
"Do you?"
Molina met his anger without reacting.
"I understand that the fastest way to ruin an investigation is to arrest the person you hate before you can prove what he did."
Lucas looked away.
She was right.
He hated that she was right.
Daniel entered with news.
He had located the court petition Vale used to unseal Rachel's supplemental testament.
It claimed new genealogical evidence suggested Emily could be an heir to a dormant family trust.
"What trust?"
"Wynn Heritage Trust Number Seven."
Lucas frowned.
"Seven?"
"Arthur Wynn created multiple trusts."
"Who benefits from Seven?"
"That's the strange part."
Daniel set down the filing.
"The beneficiary is unnamed."
"What?"
"Listed only as female descendant A."
Caroline joined them.
"That sounds normal?"
"No."
"Who controls it?"
Daniel pointed.
"Trustee was originally a law firm dissolved in 2002. Successor trustee..."
He paused.
Lucas already knew.
"Thomas Vale."
Daniel nodded.
Molina leaned forward.
"How much money?"
"Current filings don't state assets."
"Estimate?"
"Potentially enormous."
Lucas looked upstairs.
"So if Vale controls the trust, why does he need Emily?"
"Maybe he doesn't control distributions."
Daniel scrolled.
"Here. A triggering condition."
"What?"
"The trust remains dormant until the identity of female descendant A is judicially established."
Molina understood first.
"Then Vale needs the heir found."
"Or needs control of whoever appears to be the heir."
Lucas thought of the forged guardianship petition.
"Emily."
Daniel nodded.
"If Vale can convince a court Rachel was the missing descendant and Emily inherited Rachel's rights, Emily becomes financially significant."
"But Rachel wrote that she wasn't the daughter."
"Which Vale may not know."
Lucas thought about that.
"If Rachel knew who was..."
"The other daughter," Caroline said.
Lucas looked at the baby photograph again.
Mara Bennett.
He searched the name online.
Dozens of results.
None obvious.
Molina advised him not to contact her independently.
Lucas promised nothing.
That afternoon, Vanessa appeared at the front gate.
Lucas saw her through the security camera.
No wedding dress.
No makeup.
Jeans.
Sweater.
She looked younger and frightened.
He did not open the gate.
Vanessa pressed the intercom.
"I need to talk to you."
"No."
"Thomas is going to hurt someone."
"Call the police."
"I can't."
"Then leave."
"Lucas, he knows Rachel left you something."
His attention sharpened.
"How?"
"Because Natalie told him."
"Where is Natalie?"
"I don't know."
"Not good enough."
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
"Please let me in."
"No."
"I can prove what I'm telling you."
"Then give it to the police."
"I stole it from Thomas."
Lucas said nothing.
Vanessa held something toward the camera.
A phone.
"He kept recordings."
"Of what?"
"Rachel."
Lucas felt the air leave his lungs.
Vanessa whispered:
"From the week before she died."
Lucas unlocked the pedestrian gate but kept the house door closed until Molina returned.
Vanessa surrendered the phone.
No password.
Inside were eleven audio files.
Dates from four years earlier.
The final recording had been made two days before Rachel's fatal car accident.
They played it in the kitchen.
Rachel's voice filled the room.
"If Lucas ever learns about this, it'll be because you failed."
Thomas Vale replied.
"You are protecting people who don't even know you exist."
"I'm protecting my daughter."
"Emily has no connection to the trust."
"Exactly. And you are going to keep it that way."
"You found her."
Silence.
Vale again.
"You found Arthur's daughter."
Rachel answered.
"Yes."
"Name her."
"No."
"Rachel."
"You've spent twenty years turning people's lives into paperwork, Thomas. You don't get hers."
Then another voice.
A man's voice Lucas did not recognize.
"Tell us where the records are."
Rachel laughed softly.
"You already lost."
The recording ended.
Molina replayed the last ten seconds.
"Who is the man?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know."
Lucas studied her.
"Why give us this?"
"Because Thomas lied to me."
Lucas almost smiled.
"That's your reason?"
"No."
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"Because I locked Emily in that bathroom."
Her voice cracked.
"And when I heard her crying, I realized I'd become exactly what Thomas needed me to become."
Lucas did not forgive her.
Not even close.
But for the first time, he believed she understood what she had done.
Molina asked where she stole the phone.
Vanessa answered.
"Thomas's office."
"When?"
"This morning."
"Does he know?"
"He does now."
As if summoned by the sentence, Lucas's home security system chimed.
Motion detected at the rear property line.
Ryan opened the camera feed.
A man in dark clothing stood outside the fence.
He placed something on the ground.
Then walked away.
Police searched the object.
It was not a weapon.
It was a cardboard box.
Inside was Emily's missing school jacket.
A photograph of Rachel.

And a note.
ONE DAUGHTER IS ENOUGH.
