Chapter 1 - The Door Before the Vows)

For several seconds, Lucas could hear nothing except Emily breathing against his neck.
The ballroom seemed frozen around him.
His best man, Ryan Mercer, stood beside the altar staring at Vanessa.
Lucas's sister Caroline had already left her seat.
Vanessa's mother looked as if she wanted to disappear beneath the table.
Two hundred guests waited for someone to laugh and explain that this was a misunderstanding.
Nobody did.
Lucas pulled the first sheet from the envelope.
Vanessa grabbed his wrist.
"Please."
He looked at her hand.
"Take your hand off me."
"Lucas."
"Now."
She released him.
The paper was not a letter.
It was a petition.
The heading contained language Lucas recognized from the custody documents he had signed after Emily's mother, Rachel, died.
Petition for Guardianship Modification.
Below it was Emily's full legal name.
Emily Rachel Hart.
Lucas scanned the first paragraph.
His stomach tightened.
The petition stated that Lucas Hart, following his marriage to Vanessa Cole, intended to voluntarily relinquish several parental decision making rights and authorize Vanessa to become Emily's primary legal guardian.
Lucas read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
He had never seen this document.
He had never agreed to it.
Near the bottom of the second page was a signature.
His signature.
Except it was not his.
Lucas looked up.
"What is this?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"It was preliminary."
"You forged my signature."
"No."
He turned the page.
There were attachments.
Psychological evaluations.
School reports.
A statement describing Lucas as emotionally unstable since Rachel's death.
Another statement claimed Emily suffered from behavioral problems.
A third recommended that Emily temporarily live outside Lucas's home while he adjusted to marriage.
The phrase outside Lucas's home made his hands go cold.
"Where was she supposed to live?"
Vanessa glanced at the guests.
"Can we please discuss this privately?"
"Where?"
Her silence answered before her mouth did.
Lucas read further.
St. Catherine's Residential Childhood Center.
Three counties away.
A private institution.
Emily lifted her head.
"Is that the school Vanessa showed me?"
Lucas turned toward her.
"What school?"
Emily looked frightened again.
"The one with bedrooms."
Vanessa whispered, "Emily, stop."
Lucas's head snapped toward her.
"Do not tell my daughter to stop speaking."
Several guests stood.
Caroline reached Lucas first.
"Give me Emily."
"No."
Lucas held his daughter tighter.
Emily was the only thing keeping him from forgetting there were witnesses.
Caroline looked at the pages.
"What is happening?"
Lucas handed her the document.
She read.
Then looked at Vanessa with open disbelief.
"You tried to institutionalize her?"
Vanessa finally lost her composure.
"No. I tried to create an emergency plan."
"For what emergency?"
"For Lucas."
The room stirred.
Vanessa looked toward him.
"You haven't been okay since Rachel died."
Lucas said nothing.
That was true.
He had spent almost two years moving through life mechanically.
He worked.
He fed Emily.
He put her to bed.
He attended school events while surrounded by married parents and pretended he did not feel like half a person.
But grief was not abandonment.
Grief was not incompetence.
And grief certainly was not consent.
Vanessa continued.
"You were barely functioning when we met."
"And you thought that gave you the right to forge legal documents?"
"I didn't forge anything."
Lucas held up the page.
"That's supposed to be my signature."
"I was told it could be prepared in advance."
"By whom?"
Vanessa hesitated.
There.
Lucas saw it.
The first real crack.
"Who helped you?"
Vanessa glanced toward one of the tables.
Lucas followed her eyes.
Three people sat there.
Vanessa's uncle Martin Cole, a family attorney.
Vanessa's older cousin Allison.
And a silver haired man Lucas had met only once.
Thomas Vale.
Vanessa had introduced him months earlier as a family financial adviser.
Vale stood.
"This is not an appropriate place for accusations."
Lucas stared at him.
"I didn't ask you."
Vale buttoned his jacket.
"The document is obviously incomplete."
"Why do you know what document I'm holding?"
Vale stopped.
A murmur spread across the ballroom.
Ryan walked away from the altar and quietly positioned himself near Lucas.
Vanessa moved between them.
"Lucas, please listen to me."
Lucas noticed something else inside the envelope.
A photograph.
He pulled it free.
The image was old enough to have been printed rather than taken on a phone.
It showed Rachel.
His dead wife.
She was younger.
Maybe twenty five.
Standing outside a courthouse.
Beside her stood Thomas Vale.
And beside Vale stood Vanessa.
Lucas looked from the photograph to his bride.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Lucas held the photograph up.
"You told me you never met Rachel."
Vanessa's lips parted.
No answer came.
"You told me you didn't even know who she was until after we started dating."
"I can explain."
"Then explain why you're standing beside my dead wife."
Thomas Vale moved toward Vanessa.
"We should leave."
Lucas stepped between them.
"No one is leaving."
Vale's eyes hardened.
"You cannot detain anyone."
"No."
Lucas looked at Ryan.
"But I can ask hotel security to preserve every camera recording in this building."
That changed Vale's expression.
Only slightly.
But Lucas saw it.
So did Ryan.
Ryan immediately took out his phone.
Vanessa whispered, "Please don't do this."
Lucas looked at the woman he had planned to marry ten minutes earlier.
"What exactly are you afraid I'll find?"
Before she could answer, Emily tugged at his collar.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"There was another paper."
Lucas looked at her.
"What paper?"
"The one Vanessa made me write my name on."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Lucas felt the world shift again.
"When?"
Emily pointed toward the locked bathroom.
"Before she shut the door."
Lucas turned slowly toward Vanessa.
"What did you make my daughter sign?"
Vanessa did not answer.
May you like
And from somewhere behind the guests came the sound of a chair scraping violently against the floor.
Thomas Vale was walking toward the exit.
