Chapter 8 - The Man Who Wrote Two Wills)

Martin Bell did not answer his phone.

His office was empty.

His assistant said he had left unexpectedly.

Detective Hayes obtained a warrant before sunset.

They found shredded files.

A wiped computer.

And a passport missing from Martin's locked drawer.

He was preparing to run.

Adrian sat in the conference room while investigators compared Claire's original trust with the version Martin had provided.

The differences were subtle.

Deliberately subtle.

In Claire's version, if Adrian died before Lily reached twenty-five, custody would pass temporarily to Rebecca until the sealed guardian accepted responsibility.

In Martin's version, the clause allowed Adrian's spouse at the time of death to petition for financial guardianship.

Vanessa.

Adrian felt physically ill.

The marriage scheduled six weeks away had not been about romance.

It had been a doorway.

Detective Hayes looked at him.

"If you had married Vanessa and then something happened to you, she would have had a legal argument for control of Lily's assets."

"Would she have won?"

"Not necessarily."

"But she could have tried."

"Yes."

Adrian thought about life insurance.

Vanessa had encouraged him to increase it after their engagement.

He had.

Ten million dollars.

She claimed it was responsible planning because Lily had already lost one parent.

Claire's note returned to him.

Vanessa isn't after Adrian.

She's after what Lily inherits when Adrian dies.

Detective Hayes found another document.

A draft petition declaring Adrian psychologically unstable because of unresolved grief.

It had never been filed.

But it existed.

Vanessa and Martin had been building options.

If Adrian became suspicious, they could challenge his control of the trust.

If he married Vanessa, they could wait.

If he died, they could move faster.

Adrian called Rebecca.

"Change every lock."

"Already done."

"Do not take Lily anywhere alone."

"I won't."

"And Daniel?"

Rebecca lowered her voice.

"He's here."

Adrian did not like that.

Then Daniel took the phone.

"Martin is missing."

"I know."

"He's going to Voss."

"How do you know?"

"Because that's what he did in Baltimore."

Adrian looked at Detective Hayes.

"Tell me."

Daniel finally explained.

Fourteen years earlier, he, Martin, and Graham Voss worked around the same financial investigations.

Daniel discovered suspicious trust transfers.

Martin was legal counsel to several families.

Voss managed their investments.

Daniel believed Voss was laundering stolen estate funds.

He moved eight million dollars into a controlled account, planning to prove the path of the money.

Martin secretly changed the destination.

The money disappeared.

Daniel became the suspect.

"Claire discovered Martin's role years later," Daniel said.

"Why didn't she expose him?"

"Because she still needed proof linking him to Voss."

"And Vanessa?"

"She became the link."

Adrian's phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE MARTIN FINDS ME.

Adrian showed Hayes.

"Trace it."

Vanessa sent another message.

I HAVE CLAIRE'S ORIGINAL PHONE.

Adrian's pulse jumped.

Claire's phone had never been recovered from the crash.

Police assumed it was destroyed or lost.

Vanessa continued.

SHE CALLED ME BEFORE SHE DIED.

Adrian typed:

Where are you?

Vanessa replied with coordinates.

An abandoned greenhouse outside the city.

Hayes stared.

"Could be a trap."

Adrian answered:

Then we treat it like one.

They arrived with officers positioned around the property.

Vanessa stood inside the greenhouse.

No cream dress.

No carefully styled hair.

She wore a hooded jacket and looked exhausted.

When Adrian entered, she held up Claire's phone.

"Stay there."

"Give me the phone."

"Not until you listen."

"To what?"

"The truth."

Adrian almost laughed.

"You locked Lily in a kennel."

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

"I know what I did."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

For the first time, she did not make an excuse.

"I became exactly what Claire said I would become."

Adrian stared.

Vanessa continued.

"I was recruited to get close to Claire. I was supposed to learn about the trust."

"By Voss?"

"At first."

"And later?"

She looked toward the broken greenhouse windows.

"Martin."

"Did you kill Claire?"

Vanessa's face changed.

"No."

"Did you sabotage her car?"

"No."

"Did Martin?"

"I don't know."

"Stop lying."

"I'm not."

Vanessa held out Claire's phone.

"Claire called me from the road."

Adrian did not move.

"What did she say?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"She told me she knew everything."

"And?"

"She offered me a way out."

Adrian looked at the phone.

Vanessa whispered:

"I didn't take it."

Before Adrian could respond, glass shattered behind them.

Vanessa screamed.

A shot struck the metal frame beside her.

Officers shouted.

Adrian dropped behind a concrete planter.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Police ran outside.

Whoever fired had disappeared into the woods.

Vanessa was unharmed.

But Claire's phone had fallen.

The screen cracked.

Still working.

Adrian picked it up.

A recording application was already open.

One file remained.

CLAIRE LAST CALL.

He pressed play.

Claire's voice filled the greenhouse.

"Vanessa, listen to me. Martin knows you talked to Daniel."

Vanessa's recorded voice trembled.

"I didn't."

"Don't lie to me anymore."

A car horn sounded in the background.

Claire continued.

"I found the ledger."

Vanessa gasped.

"You need to leave Richmond."

"Where is it?"

"I'm not telling you."

"Claire, Voss will kill you."

Then Claire said:

"No. Voss is afraid of the person above him."

The recording ended.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

"Who is above Voss?"

Vanessa's face went white.

May you like

She whispered one name.

"Someone your family invites to dinner."
