Chapter 15 - The Woman at the Gate)

Six weeks passed.
For the first time in nearly a year, the Mercer villa became quiet.
Not empty.
Quiet.
There was a difference.
Lily learned to run across the lawn where the kennel had once stood.
Adrian replaced the old structure with a small garden.
Claire had loved lavender, so he planted lavender.
Rebecca added white roses.
Elena returned as Lily's nanny, although Adrian told her she could name any salary she wanted.
Elena laughed.
"I'll start by naming reasonable working hours."
Adrian agreed.
The investigation became national news.
Graham Voss faced charges connected to fraud, conspiracy, intimidation, and multiple estate schemes.
Martin Bell began cooperating after prosecutors confronted him with Claire's ledger.
Thomas admitted concealing evidence years earlier to protect himself and the Mercer family reputation.
His relationship with Adrian remained uncertain.
Adrian visited him once.
Thomas looked older.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Adrian answered:
"I believe you."
Thomas looked surprised.
"That doesn't mean I forgive you yet."
Thomas nodded.
It was the closest thing to honesty they had shared in years.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges connected to fraud and child endangerment.
Her cooperation helped recover money for several families.
It did not erase what she had done.
Adrian did not want it erased.
Consequences mattered.
But hatred no longer controlled his days.
Lily mattered more.
Each morning, Adrian ate breakfast with her before work.
Each afternoon, he came home before sunset.
When travel was necessary, Rebecca or Elena stayed with Lily.
No unexplained caregivers.
No blind trust.
Not because Adrian wanted Lily to grow up afraid.
Because trust, he had learned, was not the absence of questions.
It was what remained after questions were allowed.
The mystery surrounding Claire remained unresolved.
No confirmed evidence proved she survived the crash.
No confirmed evidence proved she died in it either.
The remains from the crash had been exhumed from the cremation archive for DNA analysis where retained samples existed.
Results were inconclusive.
Dr. Peter Lang remained missing.
Daniel vanished again after giving police the ledger.
He left only one message for Adrian.
I am going to find out who was driving Claire's car.
Do not follow me.
Adrian ignored the second sentence.
Detective Hayes did not.
Together, they traced Daniel's last known movements to North Carolina.
Then Kentucky.
Then nothing.
The photograph of Claire stayed locked inside Adrian's study.
He looked at it less often than he expected.
Hope was something he handled carefully now.
One evening in early October, Adrian sat on the back steps while Lily walked between the lavender plants.
She had recently learned to say Claire's name.
Not Mom.
Not yet.
Claire.
Adrian showed her photographs.
He told stories.
Your mother loved rain.
Your mother burned pancakes.
Your mother could never keep plants alive despite buying new ones constantly.
Your mother loved you more than anything.
Lily listened in the solemn way toddlers sometimes did when they understood emotion better than language.
Then she pointed toward the gate.
"Lady."
Adrian looked up.
No one.
"Lily?"
She pointed again.
"Lady."
The security intercom rang.
Adrian stood.
Elena stepped outside.
"Are you expecting someone?"
"No."
The gate camera showed a woman standing with her back to the lens.
Dark coat.
Shoulder-length hair.
One small suitcase.
Adrian's heart began beating faster.
"Stay with Lily."
He opened the security application.
"Who are you?"
The woman did not answer.
"Turn around."
Nothing.
Adrian called Hayes.
Then the woman slowly lifted one hand.
She held something toward the camera.
A silver necklace.
Claire's necklace.
The one Vanessa had accused Elena of stealing.
The one Adrian had bought Claire on their fifth anniversary.
Adrian stopped breathing.
"Who are you?"
The woman finally spoke.
Her voice came through the intercom distorted by static.
But Adrian knew it.
He had heard it in thousands of ordinary moments.
From the kitchen.
From the passenger seat.
Whispering beside him in the dark.
"Adrian."
His knees nearly gave way.
Elena covered her mouth.
Lily turned toward the sound.
The woman continued.
"Do not open the gate."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"What?"
"Listen to me."
Her voice was trembling.
"If you open this gate, he will know I found you."
Adrian looked beyond the camera feed.
The road behind the woman appeared empty.
"Claire?"
The woman finally turned.
For half a second, her face entered the camera.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar running from her temple toward her ear.
But it was her.
Claire.
Adrian reached for the gate control.
Claire shouted:
"NO."
He stopped.
She looked over her shoulder.
Headlights appeared at the far end of the road.
Claire stepped closer to the camera.
"Take Lily inside."
"Claire, what happened?"
"No time."
"Who is coming?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"The person who was supposed to die in that car."
Adrian froze.
The headlights grew brighter.
Claire backed away from the gate.
Adrian heard Lily behind him.
"Claire."
Claire heard it too.
Her face broke.
She pressed one hand against the iron bars.
"My baby."
Adrian moved forward.
"Claire, come inside."
She shook her head desperately.
"You still don't understand."
"Then tell me."
The approaching vehicle slowed.
Claire looked directly at Adrian through the camera.
"Vanessa was never supposed to hurt Lily."
"What?"
"She was supposed to make you find the kennel."
Adrian's blood turned cold.
Claire continued.
"The memory card was planted for you."
Adrian stared.
"By who?"
The vehicle stopped outside camera range.
A door opened.
Claire whispered:
"Adrian, everything you found was meant to lead you to the ledger."
"Why?"
"Because the ledger isn't evidence."
Footsteps sounded on the road.
Claire stepped backward.
Adrian gripped the gate control.
"Then what is it?"
Claire looked toward whoever was approaching.
When she faced Adrian again, terror filled her eyes.
"It's a list."
"A list of what?"
Claire answered with six words.
"The people they haven't killed yet."
The camera feed went black.
Adrian heard a scream outside the gate.
Then silence.
Lily began crying behind him.
Adrian ran toward the control panel and opened the gates.
The road was empty.
No Claire.
No vehicle.
No suitcase.
Only the silver necklace lay in the center of the pavement.
Beside it was a photograph Adrian had never seen.
Claire holding newborn Lily in the hospital.
On the back, someone had written a message.
ADRIAN MERCER WAS NEVER THE FINAL TARGET.
Below it was tomorrow's date.
And beneath the date was Rebecca's name.
Adrian slowly looked back toward the house.
Every light inside the villa went out at once.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
May you like
A man's voice whispered:
"You opened the gate."
