Chapter 6 - Claire Built a Room for the Truth)

The hidden room had electricity.

Claire had installed a separate power line beneath the villa renovation permits.

Adrian discovered the paperwork later.

She had planned the room before they moved into the house.

That realization disturbed him nearly as much as what they found inside.

Claire had been investigating something for years.

And Adrian had never known.

Metal drawers contained financial records, photographs, copied emails, and property transfers.

Daniel stood near the doorway.

"She went further than I realized."

Rebecca opened a binder.

"These are families."

There were fourteen names.

Each family had experienced a similar sequence.

A wealthy parent died.

A surviving spouse remarried.

A trust changed.

A child or elderly beneficiary was declared incompetent, removed, institutionalized, or placed under guardianship.

Assets then flowed through companies linked to Graham Voss.

Some families lost millions.

One child disappeared completely.

Adrian looked at Lily's photograph.

"Vanessa was going to marry me."

Daniel nodded.

"If something happened to you afterward, she could petition for guardianship."

"But Claire's succession document would block her."

"If Vanessa knew about it."

Adrian understood.

She needed the document.

Maybe that was why she searched Claire's study.

Maybe that was why she frightened Elena.

Maybe that was why she stayed.

Rebecca found another file.

MERCER TIMELINE.

Inside were handwritten notes from Claire.

Vanessa introduced through charity.

Vanessa asks too many questions regarding inheritance.

Vanessa asks whether Adrian has life insurance.

Vanessa enters study without permission.

Vanessa photographs Lily's birth certificate.

Voss contacts Martin's office.

Then one final line.

If I am wrong, I destroy all of this and apologize.

If I am right, Lily may be in danger.

Adrian sat down.

Claire had carried this fear alone.

Why?

Why had she not trusted him?

Then he found another envelope.

FOR ADRIAN IF HE BLAMES HIMSELF.

He almost laughed through the pain.

Claire knew him too well.

The letter began:

You will ask why I did not tell you.

Because you loved me enough to confront anyone who threatened us, and confronting them too early would have warned them.

I needed evidence, not anger.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Claire continued:

If Vanessa became part of your life after I died, understand this clearly.

Grief makes people reach for whoever is standing nearby.

That does not make you weak.

But once you know the truth, you must act.

Protect Lily.

Do not waste time punishing yourself.

Rebecca looked away while Adrian read.

He folded the letter carefully.

Then Daniel called him toward the final cabinet.

It was locked.

The brass key did not fit.

A keypad glowed beside it.

Four digits.

Adrian tried Lily's birthday.

Nothing.

Claire's birthday.

Nothing.

Their anniversary.

Nothing.

Rebecca noticed an inscription beneath the keypad.

THE DAY WE CHOSE HOME.

Adrian remembered.

Six years earlier, they had stood in the unfinished villa during a thunderstorm.

Claire had looked through the broken kitchen window and said:

"This one."

Not the day they bought it.

The day they chose it.

October 19.

Adrian entered 1019.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a laptop.

A burner phone.

And a small evidence bag containing a silver bolt.

Daniel picked it up.

"What is that?"

Adrian knew.

His stomach turned.

"A wheel bolt."

Claire's car had lost control after a tire failure.

The investigative report stated a wheel assembly had separated after impact.

Claire had apparently recovered this bolt before she died.

But from where?

Beside it was a laboratory report.

METAL FATIGUE NOT CONSISTENT WITH NATURAL FAILURE.

TOOL MARKS PRESENT.

Rebecca read the sentence aloud.

No one spoke.

Adrian opened the laptop.

One video file was saved to the desktop.

Claire appeared on screen.

She was sitting inside her car.

The timestamp showed nine hours before her death.

"I checked the wheel after I heard a sound yesterday."

She held the silver bolt toward the camera.

"Someone loosened it."

Adrian gripped the desk.

Claire continued.

"I replaced it, but I haven't told anyone."

Her eyes moved toward the rearview mirror.

"If they try again, I'll know."

The video ended.

Daniel whispered:

"They tried again."

Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice said:

"Mr. Mercer?"

"Yes."

"My name is Elena Ruiz."

Adrian stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

"Elena?"

"I'm sorry I disappeared."

"Where are you?"

"Close enough."

"Are you safe?"

A long pause.

"No."

Adrian looked at Rebecca.

Elena continued.

"And neither is Lily."

"Vanessa is gone."

"This isn't only Vanessa."

"What do you know?"

"I know who disabled the backyard camera."

Adrian waited.

"It wasn't Vanessa."

"Who was it?"

Elena's voice dropped to a whisper.

"The man who did it is standing inside your house right now."

The line went dead.

Adrian slowly turned.

Rebecca.

Daniel.

Martin.

Two police officers.

May you like

All of them stood inside the villa.

And somewhere above them, a floorboard creaked.
