Chapter 1 - The Memory Card Beneath the Kennel)

Adrian did not tell Vanessa what he had found.

That decision would save him later.

At 3:24, he carried Lily into the house through the rear doors and locked them behind him.

Vanessa was upstairs.

He could hear drawers opening.

Closet doors slamming.

Suitcases rolling across the bedroom floor.

Adrian called his sister, Rebecca.

"Come to the house."

"What happened?"

"Just come."

Something in his voice prevented further questions.

Rebecca lived twelve minutes away.

While Adrian waited, he sat on the kitchen floor with Lily in his lap.

She refused to release his shirt.

Every time footsteps sounded upstairs, her body stiffened.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything now.

The way Lily flinched when Vanessa's voice carried through the ceiling.

The way she watched the hallway.

The way she refused to look toward the staircase.

How many times had he returned from work and accepted Vanessa's explanation that Lily was "fussy"?

How many evenings had Vanessa said Lily had already eaten?

How many mornings had Adrian found his daughter unusually quiet?

He had called it grief.

He had blamed Claire's absence.

He had blamed teething.

Sleep regression.

Separation anxiety.

Anything except the woman living inside his home.

Rebecca arrived at 3:38.

She pushed through the front door without knocking.

She was thirty-two, younger than Adrian by three years, with Claire's old habit of noticing details before asking questions.

The moment she saw Lily, her face changed.

"What happened?"

Adrian told her.

Not everything.

Not yet.

Just the kennel.

Rebecca looked upstairs.

"Where is she?"

"Packing."

Rebecca handed Adrian her phone.

"Call the police."

"I am."

He had already taken photographs of Lily's knee and the kennel.

He had also saved footage from the exterior security system.

Or tried to.

When he opened the security application, the camera covering the rear lawn showed a message.

OFFLINE SINCE 2:41 PM.

Adrian frowned.

That camera had never failed.

He checked the others.

Front gate.

Driveway.

Side entrance.

Pool.

All functioning.

Only the backyard camera had gone offline.

Rebecca looked over his shoulder.

"That isn't random."

"I know."

Adrian called the police.

Two officers arrived twenty minutes later.

Vanessa came downstairs while they were interviewing Adrian.

She had changed clothes.

The cream dress was gone.

She wore jeans and a pale sweater.

Her eyes were red.

She looked fragile.

Frightened.

Nothing like the woman Adrian had seen on the lawn.

"Officer," she whispered, "this is a misunderstanding."

Adrian almost admired how quickly she transformed.

She explained that Lily had crawled toward the kennel herself.

She claimed she had tried to stop her.

She said Adrian had arrived during a stressful moment and misunderstood what was happening.

One officer looked toward Adrian.

"You said you witnessed her dragging the child?"

"Yes."

Vanessa shook her head.

"He was angry. He saw maybe three seconds."

"I saw enough."

Vanessa began crying.

Rebecca folded her arms.

"Interesting timing."

Vanessa ignored her.

Then one officer asked about the camera.

Vanessa replied immediately.

"I don't know anything about cameras."

Too immediately.

Adrian said nothing about the memory card in his pocket.

The officers documented Lily's condition.

Because the visible injury was minor and Adrian had removed Lily from Vanessa's access, they instructed Vanessa to leave the property while the investigation continued.

Vanessa stared at Adrian when they said it.

"You are really doing this?"

"Yes."

"After everything I did for you?"

Adrian looked down at Lily.

She had finally fallen asleep against Rebecca.

"Everything?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

For one second, the mask slipped.

Then she smiled politely at the officers.

"I'll stay at my sister's."

She collected two suitcases.

Before leaving, Vanessa stopped near the front door.

"Adrian."

He did not answer.

She looked toward Lily.

"You're making a mistake."

Rebecca stepped between them.

"Leave."

Vanessa walked out.

The gate closed behind her SUV at 5:06.

Only then did Adrian remove the memory card.

Rebecca stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"Inside the kennel."

Her expression changed.

"Who put it there?"

"I don't know."

Adrian inserted it into an old laptop that was not connected to the home network.

Three folders appeared.

The first was labeled LILY.

The second was labeled VANESSA.

The third was labeled CLAIRE.

Rebecca whispered, "Adrian."

He clicked the first folder.

There were twenty-seven video files.

The earliest was dated four months ago.

Adrian opened it.

The footage came from somewhere inside the kitchen.

Lily sat in her high chair.

Vanessa stood beside her.

A bowl of food rested on the counter.

Lily reached for it.

Vanessa moved it away.

Lily cried.

Vanessa leaned close.

"You're going to learn that crying doesn't get you anything."

The video ended.

Adrian opened another.

Lily was alone in the laundry room.

The door was closed.

She was crying.

Another video.

Vanessa shouting.

Another.

Lily reaching toward Elena.

Elena lifting her.

Vanessa entering.

"What did I tell you about comforting her?"

Elena answered, "She's a baby."

The recording stopped.

Adrian's hands began shaking.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

"Elena knew."

Adrian clicked the final video in the folder.

Elena's face filled the screen.

She looked terrified.

"If you're watching this, Adrian, then I probably couldn't tell you myself."

Adrian leaned closer.

Elena looked behind her before continuing.

"Vanessa is hurting Lily."

Rebecca closed her eyes.

But Elena had not finished.

May you like

"And I think Claire knew what Vanessa was capable of before she died."

The screen went black.
