Chapter 4 - Claire's Dead Brother Came Back)

Daniel Cross looked nothing like the man in the photographs.
The brother Adrian remembered from Claire's old albums had been twenty-seven, clean-shaven, broad-shouldered, always smiling.
The man standing on Rebecca's porch was thirty-eight.
A thin scar ran along his jaw.
His hair was shorter.
His eyes constantly moved.
He looked like someone who had spent years expecting danger.
Adrian arrived with police already outside.
Daniel raised both hands.
"I'm not here to hurt anyone."
Adrian crossed the yard.
"My wife buried an empty coffin because of you."
Daniel looked at him.
"I know."
"You let your family believe you were dead."
"I had reasons."
"Claire spent eleven years thinking she lost her brother."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Claire knew I was alive."
Adrian stopped.
"No."
"Not at first."
Daniel reached slowly into his jacket.
One officer ordered him to stop.
Daniel obeyed.
"My inside pocket. There's an envelope."
The officer retrieved it.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire and Daniel stood together outside a diner.
The timestamp was eighteen months before Claire died.
Adrian stared at it.
"She met you?"
"Several times."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"To protect you."
Adrian almost laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Daniel looked toward Rebecca's house.
"Where's Lily?"
"You don't get to ask."
"Is Vanessa with her?"
"No."
Daniel exhaled.
"Good."
Adrian stepped closer.
"What do you know about Vanessa?"
Daniel's answer was simple.
"Enough to know Claire was right to be afraid."
They moved inside after police verified Daniel's identity.
His death certificate had been issued after a boating accident in Belize.
His body had never been recovered.
Daniel explained that the accident had been staged.
Years earlier, he had worked in financial compliance for an investment company.
He discovered a network using family trusts and vulnerable estates to move money through shell corporations.
When he tried to expose it, someone attempted to kill him.
He disappeared.
Claire eventually found him through an encrypted email account they had used as teenagers.
"How does Vanessa fit into this?"
Daniel placed a photograph on Rebecca's dining table.
Vanessa stood beside an older man outside a courthouse.
Adrian recognized him.
Graham Voss.
A financial advisor who had attended Claire's funeral.
"Voss recruited people with access to wealthy families," Daniel said.
"Vanessa was one of them."
Rebecca stared.
"You're saying she targeted Adrian?"
"At first, Claire."
Adrian's face hardened.
Daniel continued.
"Claire met Vanessa through the charity because Vanessa volunteered there specifically to get close to her."
"Why?"
"Claire's inheritance."
Adrian looked toward the hallway where Lily slept.
"Then why stay after Claire died?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because the trust moved to Lily."
The room fell silent.
Adrian felt sick.
Every dinner.
Every embrace.
Every night Vanessa sat beside him while he grieved.
Calculated.
Daniel removed another photograph.
Vanessa entering a hotel.
Beside her was Graham Voss.
The date was two days before Claire's accident.
Adrian looked up.
"Did they kill Claire?"
"I don't know."
"Don't give me that."
"I don't know."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"Claire was investigating them. She believed they had falsified documents and manipulated estate transfers. She was supposed to meet me the morning after the crash."
Adrian stared at him.
"Why didn't you come forward?"
"Because the people behind Voss were bigger than Vanessa."
"What people?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I never identified all of them."
Adrian hated him in that moment.
Not because Daniel was wrong.
Because Daniel represented eleven years of secrets.
Claire's secrets.
Secrets that had reached into Adrian's house and touched his daughter.
Daniel reached into his pocket again.
This time he removed a brass key.
Martin's missing key.
Adrian recognized the shape immediately.
"Claire gave that to you."
"Three weeks before she died."
Daniel placed it on the table.
"She told me if anything happened to her, I wasn't supposed to use it unless Vanessa got close to Lily."
Adrian looked at the key.
Then at Daniel.
"She got close."
Daniel nodded.
"So now we open the succession document."
Martin arrived forty minutes later.
They unlocked the metal box.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Claire's handwriting covered the front.
ADRIAN MUST READ THIS FIRST.
He opened it.
The letter contained only seven lines.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, something went wrong.
Do not blame yourself for trusting someone I once trusted too.
Protect Lily first.
Trust Elena.
Trust Daniel only after he tells you what happened in Baltimore.
And whatever happens, do not sell the villa.
There is something beneath the house that Vanessa cannot be allowed to find.
Adrian read the final line twice.
Rebecca whispered:
"What is beneath the house?"
No one answered.
Then a loud crash came from upstairs.
Adrian ran.
Lily's bedroom window was open.
The curtain moved in the wind.
May you like
And on the floor beneath it lay a single cream-colored glove.
Vanessa's glove.
