Chapter 11 - Daniel and Vanessa Had Met Before)

Daniel disappeared before police could question him.
Rebecca discovered his room empty.
His phone remained on the table.
The brass key was gone.
So was one copy of Claire's evidence.
Adrian stared at the photograph until the details blurred.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
A motel parking lot.
Six months after Claire died.
The two people who claimed to be enemies had been meeting secretly.
Rebecca paced.
"I let him stay near Lily."
"You didn't know."
"Neither did you."
Adrian almost smiled.
Rebecca caught herself.
"Sorry."
"No. You're right."
Adrian had spent two days discovering how little he knew about everyone around him.
Detective Hayes examined the photograph.
"Could have been surveillance."
"Then why didn't he mention it?"
"Good question."
Thomas remained in custody while investigators reviewed his financial records.
Evidence showed he had concealed transfers and obstructed earlier inquiries.
But nothing yet linked him directly to Claire's death.
He had spent years protecting the Mercer name.
That alone might cost him everything.
Adrian did not care.
Names could be rebuilt.
Children could not.
Lily slept beside Rebecca while Adrian examined Claire's red case.
At the bottom was another note.
Daniel will tell you Martin betrayed him.
That is true.
Daniel will tell you Voss wanted him dead.
That is also true.
But Daniel will not tell you why Vanessa owes him her life.
Adrian read it aloud.
Rebecca stopped pacing.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa answered the next morning.
Daniel had saved her.
Two months after Claire died, Vanessa tried to leave Voss's network.
Martin discovered it.
He ordered someone to stage an overdose.
Daniel intercepted the plan.
He moved Vanessa to a motel and gave her enough evidence to bargain for her survival.
"Why?"
Adrian asked.
Vanessa sat behind glass in protective custody.
"Because he wanted information."
"So you worked together."
"For three weeks."
"You lied."
"Yes."
"Again."
"Yes."
Adrian hated how easily she admitted everything now.
"Did Daniel care about Claire?"
Vanessa's eyes changed.
"More than anyone."
"Then why hide?"
"Because Claire discovered he had done something worse than stealing money."
Adrian leaned forward.
"What?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"He gave Voss access to the Mercer family in the first place."
The room went still.
Years ago, before Daniel understood who Voss really was, he had introduced Voss to Thomas as an investment advisor.
That connection eventually led Voss to Claire.
To Martin.
To Vanessa.
Daniel had not created the criminal network.
But he had opened the door.
"Claire blamed him?"
"At first."
"And later?"
"She realized guilt was keeping him useful."
Vanessa looked exhausted.
"Daniel spent years trying to destroy what he accidentally helped build."
"Where is he now?"
"I don't know."
Adrian stood.
Vanessa called after him.
"He took Claire's ledger."
Adrian turned.
"What ledger?"
"The one she mentioned during the last call."
"We never found it."
"Because Daniel knows where it is."
Adrian thought of Claire's statement.
I found the ledger.
If Daniel knew where Claire hid it, why had he not recovered it earlier?
Unless he needed something first.
The brass key.
Adrian rushed back to the villa.
The hidden room had been searched repeatedly.
One cabinet remained empty.
The bank key Elena found opened Claire's safe-deposit box.
The brass key opened the hidden succession case.
What else could Daniel need it for?
Then Adrian remembered the original kennel.
Claire's letter said not to sell the villa because something beneath the house could not be allowed into Vanessa's hands.
They had assumed the hidden room was that thing.
Maybe it was not.
Adrian returned to the kennel.
Police had already processed it.
He examined the floorboards.
One board had a circular brass plate.
A keyhole.
He inserted a duplicate impression made from photographs of Daniel's brass key.
It turned.
The kennel floor lifted slightly.
Below it was a narrow steel compartment.
Empty.
Except for a scrap of paper.
Daniel had already been there.
The paper contained coordinates.

And one sentence.
ADRIAN, IF YOU WANT THE LEDGER, COME WITHOUT THE POLICE.
