Chapter 14 - The Photograph Taken After Claire Was Buried)

Adrian assumed the timestamp was false.

It had to be.

Claire's body had been identified.

There had been a funeral.

A death certificate.

He had held the urn containing what remained after the crash and cremation.

Yet the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Claire.

Same hair.

Same coat.

Same small scar beside her eyebrow.

Daniel examined it.

He looked disturbed.

"Where did this come from?"

"No return address."

"Could be manipulated."

Hayes sent it to digital forensics.

No obvious evidence of alteration.

The timestamp appeared embedded in the original image metadata.

But metadata could be changed.

The location was more difficult to explain.

The river house.

Claire's secret meeting place.

Adrian drove there with Hayes.

They searched again.

Nothing new.

Then Adrian noticed a mark carved into the kitchen windowsill.

A small bird.

Claire used to draw the same bird beside notes to Lily.

Under it were numbers.

417.

Rebecca recognized them.

"Hospital room."

Claire had given birth to Lily in room 417.

Adrian contacted the hospital.

Room 417 had been renovated.

But old records remained.

Claire's admission file contained something strange.

A sealed note added the day after Lily's birth.

AUTHORIZED RELEASE TO PATIENT ONLY.

The hospital's legal department eventually provided it.

Inside was another envelope.

Claire had planned layers inside layers.

Adrian opened it.

The first line read:

If someone is using my death to move Lily's trust, the death itself may not be the only thing they falsified.

Adrian's hands went cold.

Claire had written the note fifteen months before she died.

She had already feared someone might fake documents surrounding her death.

The letter explained that during her investigation, she discovered a physician connected to Voss had falsified death records in previous guardianship cases.

Claire wrote:

If I die unexpectedly, Adrian must independently verify my identification.

Adrian had not.

Why would he?

The crash had been severe.

Thomas handled many of the hospital procedures because Adrian was barely functioning.

Thomas.

Adrian called him from the attorney meeting room where he was being held pending bond.

"Did you identify Claire's body?"

Thomas went silent.

"Dad."

"No."

"Who did?"

"The medical examiner."

"Did you see her?"

"No."

"Did anyone in the family?"

Another silence.

"No."

Adrian stood.

"Why?"

"The condition of the body."

"Who told you not to?"

Thomas's voice weakened.

"Martin."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Martin Bell had handled the death paperwork.

Estate.

Cremation authorization.

Trust.

Everything.

Detective Hayes reopened the identification records.

The dental confirmation had been signed by a forensic odontologist named Dr. Peter Lang.

Lang appeared in Claire's ledger.

He had received money from a Voss-connected company.

Police attempted to locate him.

His house was empty.

Adrian stopped breathing like a normal person for the rest of the day.

Claire could not be alive.

Could she?

Then the crematorium records produced another inconsistency.

The identification number on Claire's file differed by one digit from the number on the transport log.

A clerical mistake.

Maybe.

Or something else.

Adrian refused to tell Lily anything.

He refused even to tell himself.

Hope could be more dangerous than grief when it had no foundation.

Three days later, forensics identified the camera used to take the river house photograph.

It belonged to Claire.

The same camera Adrian believed destroyed in the crash.

Daniel stared at the report.

"If Claire survived, why didn't she come home?"

Adrian asked the question that frightened him more.

"If she survived, who died in her car?"

No one answered.

Then Elena called from the villa.

"Adrian, someone sent Lily a package."

"Don't open it."

"I didn't."

"Who sent it?"

"There isn't a name."

Adrian arrived twenty minutes later.

The package was small.

Inside, investigators found a wooden music box.

Exactly like the one Claire kept in Lily's nursery.

Adrian opened it.

The melody began.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Three handwritten words.

Not Claire's handwriting.

HE FOUND HER.
