Chapter 2 - The Nanny Who Was Supposed to Be a Thief)

Adrian watched Elena's message six times.
Each time, the final sentence felt more impossible.
Claire knew what Vanessa was capable of before she died.
Vanessa had not entered Adrian's life after Claire's death.
That was the lie Adrian had been telling himself.
Technically, Adrian had known Vanessa for years.
She and Claire had met while working at a nonprofit organization in Richmond. Vanessa had attended birthday dinners, holiday parties, and even Lily's baby shower.
But she had always been Claire's friend.
Not Adrian's.
After Claire died in the highway accident, Vanessa appeared constantly.
She brought meals.
She handled funeral arrangements.
She sat with Lily when Adrian could not get out of bed.
Six months later, their friendship became something else.
Adrian had hated himself for it.
Vanessa told him Claire would have wanted him to keep living.
Eventually, he believed her.
Now he wondered what Claire had actually wanted.
Rebecca sat beside him at the kitchen table.
"Lily needs to stay somewhere else tonight."
Adrian looked toward the nursery monitor.
His daughter was asleep upstairs.
"This is her home."
"I know. But we don't know what Vanessa did here."
"She's gone."
"You found a hidden memory card inside a dog kennel."
Rebecca's voice softened.
"We don't know who else has been inside this house."
Adrian hated that she was right.
They packed a small bag and drove to Rebecca's home before sunset.
Adrian contacted a pediatrician, then a child advocacy specialist recommended by the police.
Lily was examined that evening.
No serious physical injuries were found.
The doctor told Adrian something that hurt in a different way.
"Young children often communicate fear behaviorally before they have enough language to explain it."
Adrian thought about every warning he had missed.
Lily refusing to enter certain rooms.
Lily crying whenever Adrian left for work.
Lily waking at night.
He had treated each symptom separately.
Now they formed one picture.
After Lily fell asleep, Adrian returned to the memory card.
The second folder contained photographs.
Vanessa meeting a man outside a bank.
Vanessa entering Adrian's attorney's office.
Vanessa searching Claire's study.
Vanessa holding papers near the fireplace.
Most were dated during the weeks after Claire's death.
One photograph showed something especially strange.
Vanessa stood beside Adrian's backyard camera.
She was looking directly into it.
The timestamp was three months earlier.
The same day Elena disappeared.
Rebecca leaned toward the screen.
"Who recorded this?"
"Probably Elena."
"Then why didn't she go to the police?"
Adrian opened the next file.
It answered the question.
Elena sat in her car.
Her hands were trembling.
"I tried to tell Adrian tonight."
She swallowed.
"Vanessa knew."
Elena looked toward the passenger window.
"She showed me photographs of my son outside his school."
Rebecca whispered something Adrian could not hear.
Elena continued.
"She said if I spoke to Adrian, she would accuse me of stealing Claire's necklace and make sure immigration investigated my sister."
Adrian clenched his jaw.
Elena was an American citizen.
Her sister was not.
Vanessa had found the right pressure point.
The next video showed Elena crying.
"I left copies where she won't think to look."
The kennel.
Adrian finally understood.
Elena had hidden the card before leaving.
But the folder called CLAIRE remained unopened.
Adrian stared at it.
Rebecca asked, "Do you want me to stay?"
He nodded.
The first file was not a video.
It was an audio recording.
Claire's voice filled the room.
Adrian stopped breathing.
He had not heard his wife's voice in months.
"Adrian, if you find this, please don't panic."
He closed his eyes.
Claire sounded alive.
Not like a memory.
Not like the careful clips Adrian sometimes replayed from old family videos.
She sounded as if she were standing in the next room.
"I need to tell you something about Vanessa."
Rebecca reached for Adrian's hand.
Claire continued.
"I think she's been lying to both of us."
A pause.
"I found documents in her apartment with your name on them."
Adrian opened his eyes.
"Documents about the company, the house, and Lily's trust."
Another pause.
Then Claire said something Adrian could not understand.
The audio distorted.
Static filled the speakers.
When Claire's voice returned, she was saying:
"If anything happens to me before I can explain this, do not let Vanessa become Lily's legal guardian."
The recording ended.
Adrian sat completely still.
Rebecca looked pale.
"What exactly happened to Claire's car?"
Adrian answered automatically.
"A tire blew on Route 64. She lost control."
"Was that ever independently confirmed?"
"The police investigated."
"Did they?"
"Rebecca."
"I'm asking because your dead wife recorded a warning about Vanessa."
Adrian stood.
He suddenly needed movement.
Air.
Anything except that room.
Claire's accident had been classified as a tragic mechanical failure.
No other vehicle was involved.
No witnesses saw the crash itself.
The car had struck a barrier and rolled down an embankment.
Adrian had never questioned it.
Why would he?
Then Rebecca noticed another file.
"There's one more."
The filename contained only a date.
The day before Claire died.
Adrian opened it.
Claire appeared on camera inside her study.
She looked exhausted.
"If I don't get the chance to say this tomorrow, there's something Adrian needs to know."
She glanced toward the door.
Then whispered:
"Vanessa isn't after Adrian."
May you like
Claire looked directly at the camera.
"She's after what Lily inherits when Adrian dies."
