Chapter 7 - The Footsteps Above the Hidden Room)

Adrian ran upstairs.

One officer followed.

They searched the kitchen.

Living room.

Study.

Bedrooms.

Nothing.

Then Adrian noticed the attic door.

Open.

It was usually locked.

He climbed.

Dust covered the floorboards.

Old furniture sat beneath white sheets.

At the far end, a small service window stood open.

Someone had escaped onto the roof.

The officer leaned outside.

A ladder rested against the rear wall.

By the time they reached the lawn, whoever had been there was gone.

But beside the attic window, Adrian found a device attached to the house network.

A small black transmitter.

The security technician later identified it as a remote access bridge.

Someone had been watching the villa's cameras.

Possibly for months.

That explained how the backyard feed was disabled at exactly the right time.

But who?

Adrian called Elena repeatedly.

No answer.

He sent one message.

Lily is safe. Please contact me.

At 8:16 that night, she replied with an address.

A roadside motel forty miles away.

Adrian wanted to go immediately.

Police insisted on accompanying him.

Daniel asked to come.

Adrian refused.

"If Elena thinks someone inside the house is dangerous, I'm not bringing anyone."

Daniel accepted that without argument.

Rebecca stayed with Lily at a secure location arranged by investigators.

Adrian drove to the motel with Detective Nora Hayes, the investigator assigned after Claire's evidence changed the case.

Elena opened the door before they knocked.

She looked thinner than Adrian remembered.

She immediately began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian did not know what to say.

Elena had tried to protect his daughter while he had believed she was a thief.

"You don't apologize."

"I left her."

"You were threatened."

"I still left."

Adrian understood the guilt.

It resembled his own.

Detective Hayes asked Elena to explain.

Elena sat on the edge of the motel bed.

"Vanessa started changing after you proposed."

"How?"

"She became cruel when you were gone."

Elena described punishments.

Isolation.

Withholding comfort.

Shouting.

Nothing graphic.

Nothing that left obvious injuries.

Everything designed to be explained away.

"I started recording because I knew you would never believe me without proof."

Adrian looked down.

"I would have believed you."

Elena met his eyes.

"Would you?"

He could not answer.

She was right.

At that time, Vanessa had helped him survive the worst year of his life.

If Elena had simply accused her, Adrian might have assumed jealousy or misunderstanding.

Elena continued.

"Then I found Vanessa searching Claire's study."

"What was she looking for?"

"A key."

"The brass key?"

"No."

Adrian frowned.

"There is another?"

Elena nodded.

"Claire had a safe-deposit key hidden in a wooden music box."

Adrian remembered the box.

It sat in Lily's nursery.

Claire used to play it during feedings.

"Vanessa found it?"

"I don't know."

Elena looked toward the window.

"The night before I left, I heard Vanessa arguing with someone."

"Who?"

"I only heard his voice."

"Daniel?"

"No."

"Martin?"

Elena hesitated.

"I think so."

Adrian felt cold.

Martin Bell.

The family attorney.

The man who possessed Claire's trust documents.

Detective Hayes asked, "What did you hear?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"Vanessa said, 'You promised Claire would never find the transfers.'"

Adrian's hands tightened.

"And Martin?"

"He said, 'Claire found everything because you got careless.'"

Silence.

Adrian remembered Elena's phone warning.

The man inside the house.

Martin had been in the hidden room when Elena called.

"Why didn't you tell me on the phone?"

"I wasn't sure he was still there."

Elena reached into her bag.

"I have something else."

She handed Adrian a photograph.

Martin Bell stood beside Graham Voss.

The date was eleven years earlier.

Daniel was also in the photograph.

All three men stood outside a conference center in Baltimore.

Adrian stared.

"What happened in Baltimore?"

Elena said, "I hoped you knew."

Detective Hayes photographed the image.

Then Elena removed a second item.

A tiny brass key.

"This was inside Claire's music box."

Adrian looked at it.

"Vanessa never found it?"

"I replaced it with a fake."

For the first time that night, Elena smiled faintly.

"She thought she was smarter than everyone."

Adrian took the key.

"What does it open?"

"Claire wrote a bank name underneath the music box."

The bank had a branch in Richmond.

The next morning, Detective Hayes obtained authorization for Adrian to access Claire's box.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

If Martin Bell gives Adrian any document concerning Lily's guardianship, verify every page.

Adrian read it twice.

Then he opened the envelope.

Inside was a second version of Lily's trust.

The signatures were different.

One version had been altered.

Which meant someone had changed the document controlling Lily's thirty-eight million dollars.

And the attorney responsible for protecting it might have been part of the scheme.
