Chapter 6 - The Other Wolf)

The name unsettled Abraham more than the gun.
Emily knew because he stopped watching the immediate threat. His eyes fixed on the man in the video with the recognition of someone seeing a grave open.
Brandon enjoyed it.
"Silas sends his regards."
"Silas died in Belgrade," Abraham said.
"Apparently he found death as inconvenient as you did."
Grant pressed the pistol harder against Howard's temple. "The ledger. Now."
Emily held it against her chest. Howard caught her gaze and moved his right hand slightly. Two fingers, then one. Twenty-one. It might have been a page number, a room, or a warning.
Abraham saw it too.
"Give it to them," he said.
Emily stared at him.
"Trust me."
Trust had become the most expensive word in the house.
Still, she tossed the ledger onto the carpet between them.
Brandon bent to retrieve it.
Howard collapsed deliberately.
Grant's pistol swung downward. Abraham crossed the distance before the commissioner recovered. He struck a nerve beneath Grant's wrist, caught the falling weapon, and pushed Howard behind the desk.
Gideon tackled Brandon. Emily drove the poker through the office door handles, trapping the security men in the corridor. Melissa backed against a cabinet, both hands over her mouth.
Grant reached for an ankle holster.
Emily kicked it away.
Pain tore through her knee, but anger held her upright.
Brandon twisted beneath Gideon and produced a slim blade from his sleeve. Before he could use it, Melissa hurled a crystal decanter. It shattered against his hand.
Everyone looked at her.
"He was going to kill you," Melissa told Gideon.
Brandon stared with cold disbelief. "After everything I gave you."
"You gave me a red dress and a prison sentence."
Gideon secured Brandon's wrists with a plastic restraint. Abraham disarmed Grant and helped Howard into a chair.
"Twenty-one," Abraham said.
Howard nodded toward the ledger. "Page twenty-one. Margaret changed the binding."
Emily opened the book. Page twenty-one contained a list of charitable grants. Nothing looked unusual until she held it near the desk lamp and saw a second seam along the paper. She separated two sheets glued together.
Between them was a transparent film printed with a dense pattern of black squares.
"The index?"
"Half of it," Howard said. "Margaret kept the other half where no Vale would willingly look."
"Where?"
"Inside the enemy's house."
Brandon laughed from the floor. "You are all too late."
Emily crouched beside him. "You have said that three times. It keeps being untrue."
"Ask your father what the Lake facility stores. Ask him why your mother spent her life paying for his sins."
Emily turned to Abraham.
He folded the transparent film and placed it in his wallet. "The Lake is not a location. It is an archive network. Margaret and I built it to preserve evidence that powerful people wanted erased. Corrupt arms deals. Trafficking routes. Political bribes. Operations conducted without lawful authority."
"Were they your operations?"
The pause answered before he did.
"Some."
Emily felt the room tilt in a way no injury had caused. "You were not a truck driver."
"I am a truck driver. It is simply not all I have been."
"Who is Silas?"
"My brother."
Even Brandon looked surprised.
Abraham continued. "We served in a unit that officially never existed. When we discovered our commanders were selling intelligence and human lives, we collected proof. Silas wanted to use it to seize control. I wanted it exposed. Margaret created the Lake so neither of us could own the truth alone."
"And then?"
"Silas murdered three members of our team and vanished after Belgrade. I believed he died in the explosion."
The unconscious intruder on the floor made a choking sound. His eyes opened, unfocused.
He looked at Abraham and smiled.
"The Wolf remembers," he murmured.
Then his gaze shifted to Emily.
"And the heir is finally awake."
His collar began to beep.
Gideon swore. "Move."
Abraham lifted Howard. Emily dragged Melissa toward the hidden passage. Gideon hauled Brandon after them, but Commissioner Grant tore free and ran for the main corridor.
The device detonated with a flat, brutal blast.
The office windows burst outward. Shelves collapsed. Fire rolled across the ceiling.
Emily hit the stone steps inside the passage. Abraham shielded her with his body as smoke followed them underground.

When she looked back, Gideon was alone.
Brandon was gone.
