Chapter 10 - What Margaret Built)

The platform descended through darkness while water cascaded around its edges. Emergency strips flickered along the walls, revealing a cylindrical shaft lined with steel.
Abraham held Noah above the rising water. Gideon forced open a maintenance cabinet and found breathing masks. There were four.
Five people stood on the platform.
"Take mine," Abraham told Emily.
"No."
"That was an instruction."
"Then it became a bad one quickly."
The platform stopped with a violent jolt. Water poured away through grates, dropping from their waists to their ankles. A circular door opened.
Beyond it, the mirror waited.
It was not a mirror in any ordinary sense. A wall of black glass curved through a vast underground chamber. Thousands of points of light moved beneath its surface like stars beneath deep water. Server columns rose behind transparent panels. Mechanical locks surrounded a central console bearing two handprints and a retinal scanner.
Margaret had built a cathedral for evidence.
Emily removed her mask.
"She did all this while running the foundation?"
"The foundation funded shelters, clinics, and legal aid," Abraham said. "Those programs found patterns governments ignored. Margaret followed the patterns. The Lake grew from what she discovered."
Noah clung to Gideon. "Where is my grandpa?"
"Safe," Emily said. "And very eager to see you."
The circular door closed behind them. Silas stepped from the far side of the chamber.
He was alone and unarmed, at least visibly. In person, the resemblance to Abraham was unmistakable. They stood like two possible endings to the same life.
"Hello, brother," Silas said.
Abraham moved between him and Emily.
"Release the exits."
"Open the mirror."
"You already destroyed most of the archive."
"I burned a relay site. The original is here, untouched and wonderfully stubborn. Margaret designed it to require an heir, a betrayer, and a witness. Emily is the heir. Brandon is the betrayer. You are the witness."
"Then why take Noah?"
"To motivate Howard. He was supposed to deliver all three. His conscience complicated the schedule."
Emily studied the console. One handprint was narrow. One broad. The retinal scanner occupied the witness position.
"Brandon's father was the original betrayer," she said. "Mom designed the lock around his bloodline."
Silas smiled. "You see faster than Brandon. That is why he hates you."
"Where is he?"
"Approaching."
Abraham spoke into his earpiece, but Mara did not answer. The chamber blocked the signal.
Silas walked beside the black glass. "Margaret believed truth should belong to no government and no individual. Noble. Impractical. The mirror contains enough evidence to collapse administrations, armies, banks, and dynasties. Released carelessly, it would destroy innocent lives with guilty ones. Controlled carefully, it can prevent wars."
"Controlled by you," Emily said.
"By someone willing to use it."
Abraham's voice was flat. "You killed our team because they refused."
"I killed them because they planned to hand the archive to men whose crimes filled half of it. You were naive then. Margaret kept you naive afterward."
The circular door opened again.
Brandon entered with Commissioner Grant and two armed officers. His wrists were no longer restrained. He had changed into a dark coat, but dried blood remained beneath his nose.
His gaze found Emily.
"You should have signed without the clause."
"You should have learned to read your wife's company charter."
Silas ordered him to place his palm on the broad scanner.
Brandon looked at the black glass. "First restore my accounts."
"You still believe this is a negotiation," Silas said.
"You need me."
Silas drew a pistol and shot Commissioner Grant in the leg. Grant collapsed screaming. The two officers raised their weapons, but Gideon and Abraham disarmed them in the same instant.
Silas kept the pistol trained on Noah.
"I need your hand," he told Brandon. "The rest is optional."
Brandon went pale.
Emily watched fear strip him of every elegant lie. He approached the console and placed his palm against the glass.
It lit red.
"Heir," the system announced.
Everyone froze.
Brandon looked at Emily with equal horror.

The broad scanner had not identified him as the betrayer.
It had identified him as Margaret Vale's heir.
