Chapter 25 - What Was in the Grave
Three days later, Emily stood at her mother's grave.
Snow covered the cemetery.
The court had authorized an exhumation.
Emily almost refused to attend.
Then she remembered Margaret's final instruction.
Verify everything.
The forensic team worked behind a temporary screen.
Abraham waited beside Emily.
Neither spoke until the medical examiner approached.
"We have enough for preliminary identification."
Emily's hands became cold.
"And?"
The examiner looked at her.
"The remains are Margaret Vale."
Emily closed her eyes.
Relief should not have accompanied confirmation of her mother's death.
But it did.
Evelyn had weaponized uncertainty.
Now uncertainty was gone.
Dental work matched.
Old fractures matched.
Archived blood samples matched mitochondrial DNA.
Margaret Vale had died exactly when Emily remembered her dying.
There had been no replacement body.
No secret mother hidden inside a mountain.
Only a daughter who had been made to doubt the last moments she spent holding her mother's hand.
Abraham looked toward the grave.
"She is here."
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
Later that afternoon, investigators interviewed Evelyn.
Her explanation was almost insulting in its simplicity.
She had manipulated cemetery databases, hospice records and genetic index entries so that anyone using digital verification would receive contradictory results.
She had never needed to replace Margaret's body.
She needed only to make Emily believe she might have.
"The best lie," Evelyn said through the interview-room glass, "is not the one people believe."
Emily waited.
"It is the one that makes them distrust what they know."
Emily stood.
"You failed."
"Did I?"
Emily looked at her.
"I checked."
Then she left.
Outside, Brandon waited under guard before being returned to prison.
His shoulder was bandaged.
"Was it her?"
"Yes."
He looked toward the cemetery.
"Our mother."
Emily studied him.
