Chapter 33 - The Sentence
Brandon was forty-eight when Emily visited him again.
Gray had appeared at his temples.
His sentence remained.
Appeals had failed.
The discovery of Evelyn's manipulation had not erased his confession, the witnesses, the physical evidence or his choices.
He had stopped trying to make it do so.
For twelve years he had assisted investigators reviewing altered Mirror records.
No payment.
No sentence reduction.
No special privileges beyond supervised archive access.
Emily sat across from him.
"Noah says you're becoming useful."
Brandon smiled.
"Damning praise."
"He learned it from Gideon."
"How is Dad?"
Emily paused.
It was the first time Brandon had used the word about Abraham.
Technically, Abraham was not his biological father.
But Margaret's absence had made family language complicated.
"Slower."
"Still driving?"
"Unfortunately."
Brandon laughed.
Then his expression changed.
"Emily."
"Yes?"
"I am sorry."
She waited.
Not because she had never heard the words.
Because this time they came without explanation afterward.
No Evelyn.
No Margaret.
No childhood.
No Silas.
No envy.
No request.
Just the sentence.
"I know," Emily said.
"Do you forgive me?"
Years earlier, the question would have angered her.
Now it simply deserved an honest answer.
"I forgive the part of you that belongs to my past."
Brandon listened.
"But forgiveness doesn't make what happened acceptable, and it doesn't require me to trust you."
"I understand."
"I think you finally do."
He looked relieved.
Emily reached across the table.
For the first time, she placed her palm against the glass opposite his.
Brandon raised his hand.
