Chapter 34 - The Blue Truck

Abraham gave up the truck at eighty-two.
Not voluntarily.
The transmission failed twenty miles outside Blackthorn.
Emily found him sitting on the hood beside the road.
Steam rose from the engine.
"You called a tow truck?" she asked.
"I called you."
"That wasn't my question."
"I considered calling a tow truck."
She laughed.
The old blue truck had crossed hundreds of thousands of miles.
It had carried Abraham toward Blackthorn on the worst night of Emily's life.
It had followed trains.
Crossed borders.
Hidden equipment governments had officially forgotten.
Now it would not shift into second gear.
Emily sat beside her father.
"So this is it?"
Abraham looked offended.
"It's a transmission."
"It's older than some countries."
"Still fixable."
"Everything is fixable according to you."
"No."
He looked toward the winter fields.
"That's one thing I've learned."
Emily leaned against his shoulder.
His hair was almost completely white now.
"What isn't?"
"Time."
She became quiet.
Abraham touched the bracelet on her wrist.
"But time doesn't only take things."
A tow truck eventually arrived.
The blue truck was restored one final time.
After that, it no longer drove highways.
Emily placed it in a glass-sided garage at Blackthorn beside a small exhibit about the anniversary night.
Not about Shepherd Unit.
Not about secret wars.
The plaque simply read:
THE TRUCK A FATHER DROVE WHEN HIS DAUGHTER CALLED.

Abraham complained that the description was sentimental.
Emily kept it anyway.
