Chapter 18 - Palisade

Three floors beneath the platform, Abraham moved through a ventilation shaft with Gideon Ross behind him.
Mara guided them from a stolen maintenance terminal outside the mountain.
Palisade had once stored military communications equipment.
Evelyn had transformed it into something else.
Server rooms occupied the old missile chambers.
Fiber lines disappeared through tunnels in every direction.
At the center of the complex sat a black-glass structure almost identical to Margaret's Mirror.
Mara saw it through a hacked camera.
"Abraham."
He stopped.
"I see it."
"She built another one."
Abraham's face hardened.
"No. She built the first one."
Years earlier, Evelyn had helped Margaret create Mirror Lake.
Margaret had believed she controlled the final architecture.
She had been wrong.
Evelyn had secretly constructed a parallel archive.
Palisade.
Every time Mirror Lake recorded a file, Palisade received a copy.
Every time someone corrected a record, Palisade preserved the version Evelyn preferred.
Two truths had been growing beside each other for decades.
Above them, Evelyn finally told Emily why she needed Brandon.
"The Mirror recognizes him as heir. Palisade recognizes me as creator."
"And me?"
"Witness."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"You need the three roles again."
"I need continuity. If Palisade merges with Mirror Lake, history becomes stable."
"Your history."
"The version least likely to collapse governments."
"The version you choose."
"Someone always chooses."
Brandon looked toward the black glass beyond the control-room window.
"What happens to my conviction?"
Evelyn smiled.
"Your conviction depends on digital evidence."
Emily turned toward him.
Evelyn continued.
"Open the system for me, Brandon, and tomorrow every authenticated record of Blackthorn House will show Emily attacking you first."
Brandon stared at the screen.
His face became unreadable.
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You walk out of prison as the victim."
Emily said nothing.
She knew Brandon.
Once, that offer would have been irresistible.
He looked at her.
Then at Evelyn.
Finally he raised his cuffed hands.
"You made one mistake."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
May you like
Brandon smiled without warmth.
"I already admitted what I did in a courtroom full of people."
