THE ANNIVERSARY CHAIN / Chapter 5 / 35

Chapter 5 - Ninety Seconds)

Emily reached the first landing before Abraham caught her arm.

"Your knee may be fractured."

"Then I will limp faster."

The answer was pure Margaret, and Abraham knew better than to waste another second arguing. He signaled Gideon to follow them. Behind the trio, white smoke thinned across a ballroom full of frightened conspirators. Abraham's team had secured Cole and four guards, but others remained somewhere in the house.

"Seventy-four seconds," Mara announced through the speakers.

Emily led them down the west corridor. Brandon's office occupied the oldest part of Blackthorn House, a paneled room Margaret had once used as a library. Brandon installed biometric locks after becoming chairman, claiming sensitive company data required protection.

The door stood open.

Melissa was on the floor, clutching her wrist. A masked man in black leaned over Brandon's desk, feeding pages of the leather ledger into a portable scanner. Beside him, a laptop displayed a countdown.

00:58.

The intruder saw Abraham and reached inside his coat.

Gideon threw a brass bookend. It struck the man's forearm before he could draw. Emily seized a fireplace poker and swept his legs. Abraham pinned him against the desk, but the intruder bit down on something hidden in his collar.

"Capsule," Gideon warned.

Abraham forced the man's jaw open and removed a shattered glass bead. The man convulsed once, then went limp.

"Poison?" Emily asked.

"Sedative," Abraham said. "He was told not to answer questions."

Melissa scrambled toward the ledger.

Emily planted the poker across her path. "Move again and I forget I was raised politely."

Melissa froze.

The countdown reached forty-one seconds.

Abraham examined the laptop. "Remote purge."

"Can Mara stop it?"

"Not through Brandon's network."

Emily looked around the room. Brandon had replaced shelves and carpets, but the old architecture remained. Her mother hated modern electrical work and insisted every important room retain a mechanical cutoff.

Emily limped to the carved molding beside the fireplace and pressed a wooden rose. A narrow panel opened, revealing three brass levers.

"Which one?" Gideon asked.

"All of them."

They pulled.

The office went dark. The laptop died at eight seconds.

For a moment, only the storm spoke.

Then Mara's voice returned through Abraham's earpiece. "Local servers are isolated. The purge stopped at sixty-eight percent."

"What survived?"

"Unknown until we image the drives."

Emily picked up the ledger. Several pages had been cut out. On the inside back cover, Margaret had written a sentence in faded blue ink.

When the house lies, ask the mirror beneath the lake.

Emily read it twice.

"There is no lake on the property," Gideon said.

"There was," Abraham replied.

He told them Blackthorn's formal garden had once contained a reflecting pool. Margaret ordered it filled after Emily nearly drowned there at age six. A greenhouse stood on the site now.

"Why would Mom hide an index beneath a pool she later destroyed?"

"Because the pool was not the lake."

Emily searched his face. "You know what she meant."

Abraham looked toward Melissa before answering. "Not here."

Melissa laughed weakly. "Still keeping secrets from her? That worked beautifully for all of you."

Emily lowered the poker. "Why did you betray me?"

"Do you want the sentimental version or the true one?"

"I want the one you tell before my patience ends."

Melissa stood slowly. The cruelty she had worn downstairs had drained away, leaving exhaustion and resentment.

"I spent eight years watching you walk into rooms and inherit respect. You inherited the company, the mansion, the foundation, even Brandon's ambition. I arranged your parties. I remembered your donors' allergies. I fixed your dresses and smiled in photographs. Then Brandon told me there was a way to stop being invisible."

"By chaining me to a floor?"

"That was not the plan."

"You held the scissors."

Melissa's mouth trembled. "The plan was to frighten you into signing. Brandon said the hammer was theater."

Emily looked at her injured knee. "He lied."

"He lies to everyone."

"And you helped him."

Before Melissa could answer, Brandon appeared in the doorway with Commissioner Grant behind him. Grant held a pistol against Howard Bell's head. Howard could barely stand.

"Put down the ledger," Brandon said.

Abraham shifted subtly in front of Emily.

Brandon noticed. "You should have stayed in your truck, old man."

"You should have learned who owned the road."

"I know who owns everything that matters."

Brandon held up a phone. On its screen, fire consumed a concrete archive building.

Abraham's expression changed.

"The Lake facility," Brandon said. "Your precious mirror is burning."

The video widened. A figure stood beyond the flames wearing a dark coat and a silver wolf pin.

He lifted his face toward the camera.

Abraham whispered a name Emily had never heard.

"Silas."
