THE ANNIVERSARY CHAIN / Chapter 12 / 35

Chapter 12 - Brandon's Choice)

Metal shutters descended over the circular door, separating the chamber from the tactical team outside. Silas remained trapped inside with Emily, Abraham, Brandon, Melissa, Howard, Mara, Gideon, and Noah.

The damaged console began a ten-minute countdown to archive sterilization.

"If the heir does not accept succession, the mirror destroys itself," Mara said. "Margaret designed a final protection against forced access."

Emily faced Brandon. "Put your hand on the scanner."

He laughed without humor. "You want me to save the evidence that sends me to prison."

"It also proves Silas manipulated you."

"Manipulated? I chose everything I did."

The blunt admission silenced the chamber.

Brandon looked at Emily. "Do not make me smaller so you can understand me. I learned what I was before our wedding. Margaret's letters found me after she died. She wrote that she had given me away to protect me from Silas. She left me money, but she left you her name, her company, her house, and her faith."

"So you married me for revenge."

"At first."

"Was any of it real?"

He looked away.

That hurt more than an easy denial.

"Some mornings," he said. "Some years. Then loving you felt like agreeing that she was right to choose you. I could not bear it."

Emily understood at last that Brandon's hatred was not the opposite of love. It was what remained after envy consumed love and demanded proof that it had never existed.

The countdown passed eight minutes.

Silas, restrained beside a server column, spoke calmly. "Let it burn. Without the archive, they cannot prove half the charges. We walk away eventually."

"You do not walk away from what happened in my house," Emily said.

"A room full of compromised witnesses? Altered video? A commissioner prepared to testify you attacked first? Brandon constructed an excellent cage."

Melissa stepped to the second scanner. "What does the betrayer have to declare?"

Mara read the recovered protocol. "A complete account of the betrayal, freely given, with no promise of immunity."

Melissa placed her palm down.

The console lit amber.

"State your name and your actions."

She began with the first forged invitation, the first copied password, and the first night she entered Emily's bedroom while Emily was away. She described the drugs in the anniversary champagne, the chain installed beneath the dance floor, the false clinic records, and every payment Brandon made. Her voice broke when she reached the scissors.

"I told myself fear made me innocent," she said. "It did not. I betrayed Emily because I envied her and because cruelty briefly made me feel visible. I expect no forgiveness."

The amber light turned green.

Betrayer accepted.

Emily approached the witness scanner.

Abraham stopped her. "The witness must have no personal gain. You are a victim and an heir to the company. The system may reject you."

Howard tried to stand. "I will do it."

His monitor sounded an alarm. He was too weak.

Noah took his grandfather's hand. "I can tell what they did."

"No," every adult said at once.

Abraham looked at the scanner.

"I am the witness."

Silas smiled. "You have more personal gain than anyone. The archive clears your name."

"Only if I ask it to."

Abraham placed his eye before the retinal lens. He declared his identity as Elias Abraham Shepherd and described the illegal unit, the stolen intelligence, the deaths in Belgrade, and his own unlawful acts. He did not excuse them. He did not blame orders. Finally, he stated that his testimony could be released while every record concerning him remained sealed.

Witness accepted.

The countdown stopped at three minutes.

Only the heir remained.

Brandon stood before the scanner.

Emily could see the temptation working through him. If he refused, evidence against him vanished. If he accepted, the archive survived but passed into his legal custody.

"You wanted her inheritance," Emily said. "Here it is. Not the money. The responsibility."

"And if I take it?"

"You answer for what you did. Then perhaps, for the first time, you decide what kind of Margaret Vale's son you are."

"You think prison will redeem me?"

"No. Consequences are not redemption. They are where redemption might begin."

Silas leaned forward against his restraints. "Let it die, Brandon. She will never call you family."

Brandon looked at Emily.

"Will you?"

She answered honestly. "Not today."

The countdown reached one minute.

Brandon closed his eyes and placed his hand on the scanner.

Heir accepted.

The black glass illuminated. Data moved beneath its broken surface like a sky returning after an eclipse.

Then the console requested the heir's first command.

Brandon opened his eyes.

"Release the Blackthorn file," he said. "All of it."

Silas screamed.

Across the country, journalists, prosecutors, courts, and public archives received an authenticated record of the anniversary night, the financial conspiracy, Commissioner Grant's corruption, and Silas's orders.

Brandon turned toward Emily as the chamber door reopened.

"Now we are even."

Emily shook her head.

"Now we are at the beginning."
