Chapter 19 - The First Unchangeable Thing

Evelyn struck Brandon across the face.
Emily almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because Evelyn had lost control.
"You think confession makes you noble?" she asked.
"No."
Brandon wiped blood from his lip.
"It makes your offer useless."
Evelyn ordered the guards to take them downstairs.
They entered the central archive chamber.
Palisade resembled Mirror Lake, but colder.
No names.
No memorials.
No mention of victims.
Only information.
Emily understood the difference immediately.
Margaret had built a place to preserve testimony.
Evelyn had built a place to preserve leverage.
The central console awakened when Brandon approached.
HEIR IDENTIFIED.
A second message appeared when Emily stepped beside him.
WITNESS IDENTIFIED.
Evelyn placed her palm against another scanner.
CREATOR IDENTIFIED.
"Begin continuity merge," Evelyn ordered.
The system requested authorization from the heir.
Brandon did not move.
A guard pressed a gun against Emily's back.
Evelyn spoke softly.
"Authorize it."
Brandon looked at Emily.
She shook her head.
The gun pushed harder.
Brandon whispered, "You always were terrible at letting other people save you."
"So were you."
Something flickered across the console.
Emily saw a string of numbers.
She recognized one.
The bank-box number Howard had given her.
Then another.
The date of the anniversary party.
Then the identifier of her bracelet.
Margaret had hidden something deeper than files.
Emily understood.
"Chain of custody."
Evelyn went still.
Emily leaned toward the console.
"Every altered file points backward."
Brandon followed her thinking.
"To the version before it."
"And that version points to the one before that."
Evelyn stepped toward the console.
Emily smiled.
"You could rewrite the evidence."
The screen began displaying thousands of linked signatures.
"But you couldn't erase the fact that something had been rewritten."
MARGARET VALE PROTOCOL DETECTED.
Evelyn whispered, "Impossible."

A new title appeared.
