Chapter 37 - The Funeral Without SecretsEvelyn Hale died eleven months later.

She was eighty-four.

There was no assassination.

No hidden medication.

No secret transfer.

No mysterious final visitor.

Her heart simply stopped during the night.

Clara found that strangely difficult to accept.

After so many manufactured tragedies, ordinary death felt suspicious.

The funeral was small.

Evelyn had requested it.

No press.

No corporate executives unless personally invited.

No Hale family mausoleum.

Sienna sat beside Clara.

Daniel sat on Clara's other side.

Ethan remained at the back.

He had asked whether attending would be inappropriate.

Clara told him Evelyn had lied to nearly everyone in the room.

He qualified.

After the service, the attorney handed Clara an envelope.

She nearly laughed.

"Seriously?"

"Your grandmother insisted."

Inside was not a trust.

Not a confession.

Not a key.

Just a letter.

Clara read it alone.

Evelyn did not ask forgiveness.

That surprised her.

Instead, she wrote that forgiveness had become another form of control in their family—powerful people confessing because they wanted victims to make them feel clean.

So Evelyn asked for nothing.

She left Clara no secret fortune.

Her remaining personal estate went to restitution programs.

Her house went to a foundation for people rebuilding legal identities.

The final paragraph contained only one personal request.

Do something our family never learned to do.

Be happy without proving anything.

Clara folded the letter.

Sienna found her outside.

"Anything terrible?"

"No."

"Secret sibling?"

"No."

"Underground vault?"

"No."

"Dead person who isn't dead?"

"No."

Sienna looked suspicious.

"That's disappointing."

Clara laughed.

Then cried.

Sienna held her.

For several minutes, neither sister said anything.

Across the cemetery, Ethan waited.

When Clara finally approached him, he said:

"I'm sorry."

"For Evelyn?"

"For everything."

Clara studied him.

Years earlier she had wanted those words desperately.

Now they felt different.

Not useless.

Just late.

"I know."

Ethan nodded.

He did not ask whether she forgave him.

That was how Clara knew he had finally changed.
