Chapter 33 - The Employee Who Never Took VacationThe traitor was not a board member.

That was the first surprise.

The second was that Clara had spoken to him almost every week for five years.

Arthur Bell.

Fifty-nine.

Deputy director of identity compliance.

Quiet.

Divorced.

No children.

Twenty-two years at Aurora and its predecessor companies.

Arthur never missed work.

Never requested promotion.

Never appeared in photographs.

Never attended executive dinners.

And, Naomi discovered, had not taken a vacation since Victor's arrest.

Sienna looked at his employment history.

"People like this are how empires survive."

Clara understood.

Victor had been theatrical.

Arthur was infrastructure.

They searched his office after midnight.

Nothing.

Then Daniel noticed the filing cabinet.

Not what was inside it.

The cabinet itself.

"That's old."

Sienna stared at him.

"It's a filing cabinet."

"No. Look at the hinges."

Daniel restored antique furniture now. He understood objects that had been altered.

He removed the rear panel.

Behind it were forty-three paper files.

The same forty-three names from Victor's recording.

Clara opened Ethan's.

The final page contained an address.

A farmhouse in Pennsylvania.

And one handwritten instruction.

DO NOT RECOVER UNTIL HALE SUCCESSION IS COMPLETE.

Naomi looked up.

"Succession?"

Clara knew immediately.

"Evelyn."

Her grandmother's health was failing.

If Evelyn died, a final set of Hale trust provisions would activate.

"But the Geneva assets are gone," Sienna said.

"The known ones."

Clara called Evelyn.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Daniel was already reaching for his coat.

They reached Evelyn's house forty minutes later.

The front door stood open.

Her nurse was unconscious in the hallway.

Evelyn was gone.

On the dining-room table sat a single photograph.

Evelyn at twenty-eight.

Victor beside her.

And behind them stood Arthur Bell.

Clara turned the photograph over.

One sentence had been written across the back.
