Chapter 25 - Julian MercerThe real Julian asked Clara for one meeting.
She almost refused.
Then agreed.
Not because he was her husband.
He never had been.
Because a man had spent eleven years watching someone else live his life.
That deserved acknowledgment.
They met beside the river.
No lawyers.
Naomi remained nearby anyway.
Julian smiled when he noticed.
“Smart.”
“I learned.”
They sat.
For several minutes neither spoke.
Finally Julian said:
“I used to hate you.”
Clara looked at him.
“That’s an unusual opening.”
“I watched Ethan marry you.”
“You didn’t know me.”
“I know.”
“But you hated me.”
“I hated everyone living in the world while I couldn’t.”
Clara understood more than she wanted to.
“Then I watched you take Aurora away from him.”
“You enjoyed that?”
“Yes.”
She almost laughed.
“At least you’re honest.”
Julian became serious.
“I helped Ethan hide things from you.”
“What?”
“Victor’s payments. Helena’s network. Some of the accounts.”
“Why?”
“Because exposing them too early would have revealed where I was.”
Clara nodded.
The familiar logic.
Protection through deception.
He saw her reaction.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
Julian looked toward the water.
“I spent eleven years believing getting my name back would fix me.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
“What do you want now?”
“My own name.”
“You already have it.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Julian Mercer belongs to too many people.”
A month later, he legally changed his name.
Julian Charles Rowe.
Not because Charles deserved honor.
Because the original Charles Mercer had died without ever getting to choose who he was.
Julian kept Mercer only in sealed historical records.
He wanted no company.
No Hale money.
No marriage he had never lived.
Clara respected him for that.
Before leaving, he asked:
“Did Ethan love you?”
Clara looked at the river.
“Yes.”
“Do you still love him?”
She thought.
“Some part of me loves the person I thought he was.”
Julian nodded.
“That sounds terrible.”
“It is.”
They laughed.
Then parted.
Not lovers.
