Chapter 29 - The Honeymoon She Finally TookThree years after JFK, Clara returned to Hawaii.

Alone.

That surprised everyone.

Sienna offered to come.

Clara refused.

Naomi said she would work remotely nearby.

Clara refused more strongly.

Daniel asked whether she was sure.

“Yes.”

She booked a normal room.

Not presidential.

No corporate account.

No embroidered robes.

No honeymoon package.

On the first morning, Clara walked onto the same beach where Julian—Ethan—had once expected to celebrate betraying her publicly.

She felt nothing dramatic.

No triumph.

No grief.

Just heat beneath her feet.

The hotel manager recognized her.

He had been the same man who removed Ethan and Sienna from the suite years earlier.

“Ms. Hale.”

“Clara.”

He smiled.

“I remember.”

“I assumed.”

He hesitated.

“Would you like the presidential suite? Complimentary.”

Clara laughed.

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

She pointed toward the small ocean-view room she had booked.

“That one belongs to me.”

The sentence surprised her.

Not the room.

The choice.

That evening, she opened a copy of the letter she had once written Ethan at JFK.

Investigators had finally returned the original after Victor’s trial.

She had refused to read it for years.

Now she opened it.

Julian,

I kept waiting for you to choose our marriage without me forcing you to.

I thought love meant patience.

I confused patience with permission.

If you board that plane with her, do not come home expecting me to be where you left me.

I will not destroy you.

I will simply stop protecting you from the consequences of being yourself.

Clara read the final line twice.

Then smiled sadly.

She had been wrong about one thing.

She had not known who “yourself” even meant.

But she had known who she was becoming.

She folded the letter.

The next morning, she burned it in a hotel fire bowl with permission from staff.

No drama.

No audience.

The paper curled.

The ink disappeared.

Her phone buzzed.

Sienna.

Are you miserable yet?

Clara typed:

Terribly. Ocean. Breakfast. Silence.

Sienna replied:

Monster.

Then another message.

Proud of you.

Clara stared at it.

She typed:

May you like

I know.

And put the phone down.
