Chapter 18 - The Husband Who Could Not Prove He Was HimselfThe federal prison denied anything unusual.

Their prisoner had Julian Mercer’s fingerprints.

Julian Mercer’s dental records.

Julian Mercer’s childhood scar.

Julian Mercer’s DNA profile.

Then Naomi asked the obvious question.

“Compared against what?”

Silence.

Every official reference sample had passed through Mercer-controlled medical providers.

The foundation of his identity could have been manipulated decades earlier.

Clara requested a childhood biological sample.

Helena had kept one.

A lock of Julian’s hair from his first haircut.

It sat inside a silver box confiscated during the Mercer estate search.

The DNA did not match the man in federal custody.

Daniel sat beside Clara as the lab report arrived.

“He isn’t Julian.”

Clara felt no relief.

“Then who did I divorce?”

They confronted the prisoner.

He stared at the test.

Then laughed.

Not with amusement.

With exhaustion.

“I wondered when someone would finally check.”

Naomi leaned forward.

“Your name.”

“Ethan Rowe.”

Clara’s stomach turned.

“How long have you lived as Julian?”

“Eleven years.”

“Did you marry me?”

“Yes.”

Everything inside Clara went quiet.

Not the legal question.

The emotional one.

The man who humiliated her at JFK.

The man who cheated with Sienna.

The man who signed the divorce papers.

Ethan.

Not Julian.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than she expected.

“You knew every day.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me marry you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because I loved you.”

Clara stood.

Naomi moved slightly, but Clara raised a hand.

Ethan continued.

“I was assigned to enter Hale circles. You were supposed to trust me. Marrying you was never the original plan.”

“You expect that to help?”

“No.”

“When did you stop following Victor?”

“Before our engagement.”

“Then why not tell me?”

“Because Ethan Rowe had been declared dead.”

Clara froze.

“If I told you, Victor would know I had broken protocol. He would kill me and replace me again.”

“So you protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

“And betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

“And Sienna?”

His face tightened.

“That was mine.”

“Not Victor’s?”

“No.”

“No orders?”

“No.”

“Then at least one thing belonged to you.”

He accepted the cruelty.

“Yes.”

Clara turned toward the door.

Ethan spoke.

“The real Julian is the man in Sienna’s video.”

She stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Because I met him.”

“When?”

“Six months before the wedding.”

Clara turned slowly.

“He came to me and asked me to help destroy Victor.”

“Why would he trust the man wearing his life?”

“He didn’t.”

Ethan smiled bitterly.

“He hated me.”

“What happened?”

“We made an agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“To keep you alive.”

Clara stared at him.

Ethan continued:

“You were never supposed to be my wife, Clara.”

May you like

His eyes filled.

“You were supposed to be Victor’s final replacement.”
