Chapter 16 - The Man Who Walked Out of the DeadThe airport remained dark for seven seconds.

It was enough.
When the emergency lights came back, Charles Mercer was gone.
Federal agents sealed the terminal within ninety seconds.
Nobody left.
Nobody entered.
Every restroom was searched.
Every service corridor.
Every baggage tunnel.
Every maintenance room.
Nothing.
Only the wet footprint remained on the jet bridge.
Clara stood behind reinforced glass while Naomi watched agents replay the footage frame by frame.
Daniel arrived beside them.
His face had gone gray.
“That was Charles.”
Clara turned.
“You are certain?”
“I watched him die.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
Not the man from the Mercer estate.
Not someone with Charles’s posture.
Charles.
Clara looked toward the isolated laptop containing Sienna’s video.
ONE HUSBAND.
TWO SISTERS.
THREE IDENTITIES.
Naomi spoke quietly.
“Maybe the phrase is literal.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Three Julians?”
“Or three identities attached to one man.”
Clara thought about the Julian currently in federal prison.
The Julian standing beside Sienna in the video.
And the husband she had shared a bed with for three years.
For the first time, she wondered whether those were necessarily the same person.
Her phone rang.
Blocked number.
Everyone froze.
Clara answered.
“Hello?”
A man spoke.
“Do you remember the first night Julian said he loved you?”
Her blood turned cold.
Julian.
Not his voice exactly.
The rhythm.
The private softness.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
She did not answer.
The caller continued.
“Your grandmother’s winter garden. You were angry because he spilled champagne on the white orchids.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Only two people had been there.
Her.
Julian.
“What do you want?”
“To keep you away from Greenhaven.”
“Then why send me the location?”
“I didn’t.”
Clara looked toward Naomi.
“Who did?”
“Victor.”
“Where is Sienna?”
A pause.
“Alive.”
“Are you Julian?”
A longer silence.
“I don’t know anymore.”
The call disconnected.
Daniel moved first.
“We go to Greenhaven.”
Naomi shook her head.
“That is exactly what Victor expects.”
Clara stared at the black drive.
“No.”
Both turned toward her.
“He expects me to chase Julian.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Open the other thing.”
“The letter?”
Clara looked toward the evidence officer carrying the envelope she had written six months earlier.
“No.”
She pointed at Sienna’s handbag.
“The lining.”
The bag was scanned.
Inside the leather structure, investigators found a flat metal strip no thicker than a credit card.
It contained coordinates.
Not Greenhaven.
A private cemetery outside Hartford.
One grave was highlighted.
CHARLES MERCER.
They arrived before midnight.
The grave had already been opened.
Inside the coffin was no body.
Only a mirror.
Clara stared down at her own reflection.
Across the glass, someone had written:
THE FIRST REPLACEMENT WAS NEVER JULIAN.
Daniel whispered:
“Then who was?”
A voice answered from behind them.
“Me.”
Charles Mercer stepped from between the trees.
He raised empty hands.
May you like
And said:
“My name was Victor Dane before Victor Dane stole it.”
