Chapter 17 - Victor Was a Name Before It Was a ManFederal agents surrounded Charles instantly.

He did not resist.
He asked only to speak where nobody from the Dane network could hear.
They moved him to an underground interview room beneath the courthouse.
Charles laughed when Naomi called him Charles.
“That name lasted thirty-two years. I suppose I earned it.”
Clara sat across from him.
“Then what were you born as?”
He looked at her.
“Victor Elias Dane.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“No.”
Charles nodded.
“The man you know as Victor was born Peter Mercer.”
Daniel stared.
Charles continued.
Peter and Charles had been brothers.
Poor.
Brilliant.
Ambitious.
Their father worked security for Clara’s grandfather.
Victor Dane—the original Victor—was the son of a wealthy political fixer connected to Aurora’s earliest investors.
The boys resembled each other enough as teenagers that someone noticed.
Not physically identical.
But similar height.
Bone structure.
Voice.
That observation became an experiment.
Peter was taught Victor’s mannerisms.
Signatures.
Speech.
Memories.
At first, only to impersonate him briefly during financial negotiations.
Then the real Victor discovered the scheme.
He threatened exposure.
Clara leaned forward.
“What happened?”
Charles looked at his hands.
“They erased me.”
“You?”
“The original Victor.”
A car crash was staged.
Medical records were changed.
The Mercer brothers were told the original Victor died.
He had not.
He woke months later inside Greenhaven under the name Charles Mercer.
Daniel whispered:
“So Peter took your identity.”
“Yes.”
“And you took Charles’s.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to the real Charles?”
The answer took too long.
“He died during the transfer.”
Silence.
Clara understood the horror.
Peter became Victor.
Victor became Charles.
Charles died as nobody.
The system had begun with one stolen identity.
Then grown into an industry.
“Why did you cooperate?”
Charles looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted my life back.”
“So you helped them steal others.”
“Yes.”
“For thirty years?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You came to my wedding. You ate in my home.”
“I watched your family because Peter believed you would eventually discover what he had done.”
“Did Helena know?”
“Some.”
“Julian?”
Charles looked at Clara.
“That is where it becomes worse.”
Clara did not blink.
“Tell me.”
“Julian Mercer was born Julian Mercer.”
Relief tried to rise.
Charles destroyed it immediately.
“But the man you married was not the first Julian.”
Clara gripped the table.
Charles explained.
At twenty-five, Julian discovered Helena’s involvement with Victor.
He planned to report them.
He disappeared for eleven days.
When he returned, he behaved differently.
Less impulsive.
More controlled.
Helena blamed trauma.
Nobody challenged her.
Clara whispered:
“They replaced him.”
“No.”
Charles shook his head.
“They tried.”
“What does that mean?”
“There were two candidates.”
One was Julian.
The real one.
The other was a young man chosen from Greenhaven because he resembled Julian.
The replacement was trained for eighteen months.
But during the final phase, Julian escaped.
Two men with the same legal identity entered the world.
Victor decided that was more useful than killing either.
Clara remembered Sienna’s message.
ONE HUSBAND.
TWO SISTERS.
THREE IDENTITIES.
“Three identities,” she said.
Charles nodded.
“Julian Mercer. Ethan Rowe. And the identity Victor created when one of them needed to disappear.”
“Which one married me?”
Charles looked directly at her.
May you like
“I don’t know.”
For the first time in six months, Clara felt afraid of the answer.
