Chapter 31 - The Letter That Arrived After the EndSix months after the Geneva vault closed, someone mailed Clara her wedding ring.

There was no return address.
No note.
No fingerprints.
Just the ring she had removed at JFK five and a half years earlier, resting inside a small black box on her kitchen table.
Clara stared at it without touching it.
There was only one problem.
That ring should not have existed anymore.
Federal investigators had taken it with the contents of the envelope she had left for Ethan. According to the final evidence inventory, it had been destroyed after Victor Dane's trial.
Clara called Naomi.
She arrived twenty-seven minutes later.
Sienna arrived twelve minutes after her.
Daniel arrived last, carrying coffee and looking irritated that nobody had told him whether this was an emergency requiring breakfast.
Sienna pointed at the box.
"That isn't funny."
"No," Clara said.
Naomi put on gloves.
She lifted the ring.
Something rattled.
All four of them froze.
Naomi examined the band.
"There is something inside it."
The inner gold lining had been altered.
A microscopic compartment had been cut beneath the engraving.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Was that there when you wore it?"
"No."
Naomi opened the compartment.
Inside was a piece of polymer no larger than a grain of rice.
A storage chip.
Sienna whispered, "Of course."
Clara looked at her.
"Of course what?"
"Your marriage couldn't just end like a normal marriage."
Despite herself, Clara almost laughed.
Naomi inserted the chip into an isolated forensic reader.
One file appeared.
No folders.
No encryption.
A video.
The timestamp was six years old.
Clara's wedding day.
The screen turned black.
Then Victor Dane appeared.
He looked younger.
Calmer.
He was sitting in a room Clara did not recognize.
Behind him was a wall covered in photographs.
Clara.
Sienna.
Ethan.
Julian.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
And dozens of strangers.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"If Clara Hale is watching this," he said, "then Project Homecoming failed."
Nobody moved.
Victor smiled.
"But failure was always one of its possible outcomes."
Sienna stepped closer.
"What the hell does that mean?"
Victor continued.
"The Hale vault was never the project."
Clara felt cold.
"The vault was bait."
Naomi paused the video.
Daniel swore quietly.
Clara looked at the photographs behind Victor.
One picture caught her attention.
A little boy.
Perhaps eight years old.
Standing beside Ethan.
She had never seen him before.
"Continue."
Naomi pressed play.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"The real inheritance was never money."
He leaned toward the camera.
"It was identity."
The video ended.
Then the reader displayed a second file.
A list of names.
Forty-three people.
Beside each was a number.
Most were marked CLOSED.
Seven were marked DECEASED.
Three were marked UNRESOLVED.
And one was marked ACTIVE.
Clara read the name.
Then read it again.
Sienna stopped breathing.
Daniel dropped his coffee.
The active file belonged to someone they all knew.
ETHAN ROWE.

And beneath it were four words.
HE WAS NEVER RELEASED.
