Chapter 20 - Beneath GreenhavenThe entrance was underwater.

An old maintenance shaft beneath the reservoir led to a sealed elevator.

Federal divers found it at dawn.

By noon, tactical teams entered.

Clara watched remotely.

She hated it.

But she did not insist on being first through the door.

Growth sometimes looked like staying behind.

The underground facility had thirty-one rooms.

Twenty empty.

Six containing medical equipment.

Three archive chambers.

One operating theater.

One locked residential suite.

They found Sienna there.

Alive.

She attacked the first agent with a metal lamp because she believed he belonged to Victor.

When Clara reached the medical unit an hour later, Sienna sat beneath a blanket with bruises around both wrists.

They looked at each other.

No dramatic embrace.

No instant forgiveness.

Sienna spoke first.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Clara almost said because you’re my sister.

Instead:

“Because you asked.”

Sienna looked down.

“That’s probably better.”

Clara sat across from her.

“Where is Julian?”

Sienna’s expression changed.

“He was here.”

“Was?”

“Victor moved him when the alarms started.”

“Is he really Julian?”

Sienna nodded.

“I tested him myself.”

Clara almost smiled.

“Of course you did.”

“Three labs.”

The real Julian had spent eleven years under rotating false identities.

Victor used him as leverage against Helena, Charles, and Ethan.

When Ethan began resisting, Victor threatened to restore Julian publicly and frame Ethan for identity theft.

When Julian resisted, Victor threatened Clara.

Neither man knew how much the other was cooperating.

Victor kept them suspicious.

Useful.

Divided.

Clara understood the pattern.

Victor never controlled people only with fear.

He controlled them by making trust dangerous.

Sienna watched her.

“You want to ask whether Julian loved you.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“No.”

Sienna almost smiled.

“Liar.”

Clara exhaled.

“Fine.”

Sienna’s answer surprised her.

“He didn’t know you.”

Clara frowned.

“He watched you.”

“That isn’t knowing.”

“No.”

“He knew facts. Your schedule. Your family. What Ethan told him.”

Clara nodded.

“So no.”

“Not then.”

“Then?”

Sienna looked toward the hallway.

“The last six months changed him.”

“How?”

“He stopped asking what was his.”

Clara said nothing.

“He stopped asking for his company, his name, his marriage.”

Sienna’s voice softened.

“He only asked whether you were safe.”

Clara looked away.

That was not reconciliation.

It was not redemption.

But it mattered.

An agent entered quickly.

“We found another chamber.”

Inside were twelve hospital beds.

Eleven empty.

One occupied.

A man lay unconscious beneath monitoring equipment.

His face was Julian’s.

Clara stopped at the doorway.

Sienna whispered:

“That’s him.”

Then Naomi looked toward a second observation window.

Another man stood behind the glass.

Same face.

Same height.

Same scar.

May you like

He smiled.

“Which one?”
