“Why train me to expose you?” Mara asked through the video connection.
“To determine whether Lillian chose correctly.”
“You worked for her?”
“At first.”
Frederick was the son of the third woman authorized to operate as Eleanor. His mother had died maintaining the identity, leaving him convinced the registry belonged to those who had sacrificed their lives for it—not to the Sutton bloodline.
Victor placed several hard drives on the resort table.
They had copied the archive.
Destroying the offshore registry would not destroy the information.
Margaret had told the truth.
Elise looked at Mara.
“Terminate it.”
Charles still refused consent, but Mara now had evidence that Frederick had used her identity.
She requested an authentication audit.
The system compared physical habits rather than DNA: typing rhythm, pressure, timing and decision sequence.
The fraudulent authorizations failed.
OWNER IDENTITY CLONED.
FINANCE ROLE CORRUPTED.
Charles’s voting authority disappeared.
Six roles approved termination.
Rose withheld hers.
“The identity network protected people too,” she said. “Witnesses. Refugees. Children escaping violent families.”
“It also sold people,” Elise replied.
“Then change it. Don’t erase it.”
The water reached the chamber entrance.
Two minutes remained.
Mara faced the central choice.
Termination would close every false identity immediately, potentially exposing innocent people.
Preservation would leave the network vulnerable to Agnes, Frederick and Victor.
She selected a third option hidden beneath the audit menu:
SEVER OWNERSHIP.
The system could release protected identities from centralized control while permanently locking financial and succession records.
It required the owner to surrender all inheritance rights.
Patricia looked at Mara.
“You would lose the estate.”
“It was never ours.”
Mara confirmed.
The registry requested the reservation holder’s approval.
Patricia placed her hand on the table.
“I approve.”
The system began severing ownership.
Across the network, properties disconnected one by one.
Agnes screamed through the speakers:
“You have no idea what you are releasing!”
The offshore doors unlocked.
Adrian shouted from the corridor.
A rescue vessel had arrived.
As everyone fled, Mara looked back at the table.
The termination counter stopped at ninety-nine percent.
One property remained connected.
Its location was concealed.
Its name appeared briefly:

Then the chamber disappeared beneath the water.
