THE FRAME ABOVE LILY / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Frame Above Lily

The picture frame was already falling when Rachel Cole understood that Vanessa Hart had not come into the hospital nursery to argue.

She had come to destroy something.

Or someone.

Rachel stood three feet from the bassinet, one hand still resting on the strap of her handbag, when Vanessa raised the heavy framed family photograph over her head.

Below it, two-week-old Lily Mercer lay on the thin hospital mattress.

The newborn wore a pale pink onesie beneath a loose white blanket. A fresh surgical bandage crossed her tiny stomach. Her cry was weak, almost breathless, the sound of a baby who had already spent too much of her short life beneath fluorescent lights.

Rachel stared at the frame.

Then at Vanessa.

"Are you insane?"

Vanessa did not answer with hesitation.

Her face was cold.

"Stay out of this, you nosy bitch."

Behind Rachel, the nursery door clicked.

Brooke Hart had locked it.

Rachel heard the sound and understood everything at once.

This was not anger.

This was planned.

Vanessa brought the frame down.

Rachel moved before she had time to think.

She lunged forward, scooped Lily from the bassinet, twisted her body away, and felt the corner of the frame strike the mattress where the baby's stomach had been less than a second earlier.

Lily screamed.

Rachel's heart seemed to stop.

She held the baby's head against her shoulder with one hand and grabbed the frame with the other.

Vanessa reached for it.

Rachel ripped it free and hurled it toward the dresser.

The frame hit the wooden edge with a crack.

Glass fractured.

Vanessa slapped Rachel across the face.

The force turned Rachel's head sideways.

Her glasses shifted crookedly across her nose.

Pain burned along her cheek.

Brooke grabbed Lily's blanket.

"Give her back!"

Rachel turned her back to both women and tightened her arms around the baby.

"You touch her again, and I'll break your damn arm."

Brooke froze.

Vanessa did not.

She shoved Rachel hard into the wall.

Rachel's shoulder struck first.

The rolling medical cart tipped sideways.

Bottles crashed across the floor.

Packages of sterile gauze scattered beneath the bassinet.

A plastic container filled with used medical tissue fell open near the wall.

Lily cried against Rachel's chest.

Rachel forced herself to remain standing.

One hand supported Lily's head.

The other pressed against Vanessa's shoulder, holding her away.

Then someone hit the locked door from the hallway.

Once.

Twice.

A man's voice thundered through the wood.

"Open this door now!"

Grant.

Vanessa stopped moving.

Her expression changed so quickly Rachel almost missed it.

The fury vanished.

Fear replaced it.

Grant hit the door again.

The lock cracked.

Brooke stepped backward.

"Vanessa."

"Shut up."

Another impact.

The door burst inward.

Grant Mercer appeared in the doorway wearing a dark jacket and jeans, his face already twisted with panic.

He looked at Lily.

At Rachel.

At the blood beginning to run from the narrow cut on Rachel's cheek.

At the shattered glass.

At Vanessa.

At Brooke.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa moved first.

"Grant, thank God. Rachel attacked me."

Rachel could not believe what she had heard.

Grant stared at his wife.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

"She lost control. She grabbed Lily. I tried to stop her."

Rachel opened her mouth.

Then something moved behind Vanessa.

The damaged photograph frame on the dresser tilted.

Its backing had split open from the impact.

A thin cream-colored envelope slid halfway out.

Then a small brass key dropped onto the dresser.

Grant heard it.

His eyes moved downward.

The envelope followed.

On the front, written in black ink, were four words.

For Grant, if necessary.

Grant stopped breathing.

Rachel recognized the handwriting before he did.

Melissa's.

Grant's former wife.

Lily's mother.

The woman who had died eleven days earlier.

Vanessa saw the envelope.

Every trace of color left her face.

Rachel looked from Vanessa to the envelope.

Grant did the same.

Then Vanessa lunged for it.

Rachel understood.

Whatever had nearly happened to Lily was connected to whatever Melissa had hidden inside that frame.

Grant reached the dresser first.

He grabbed the envelope.

Vanessa caught his wrist.

"Don't."

It was the first word she had spoken that sounded afraid.

Grant stared at her fingers around his arm.

Then slowly looked into her eyes.

"Why?"

Vanessa released him.

Brooke backed toward the wall.

Rachel held Lily closer.

Grant opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter.

A bank deposit receipt.

And a tiny black memory card taped to the paper.

Grant unfolded the letter.

His eyes moved across the first line.

Rachel watched his face change.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Then horror.

Grant whispered one sentence.

"She knew."

Vanessa turned toward the broken door.

Rachel stepped between her and the hallway.

Grant kept reading.

His hands began to shake.

At the bottom of the letter was Melissa's signature.

Above it was a date.

Six days before Lily was born.

Grant lifted his head.

"What did you do?"

Vanessa said nothing.

May you like

Grant took one step toward her.

"What did you do to Melissa?"
