Chapter 7 - The Sister Who Knew Too Much
Brooke's statement lasted three hours.
By the end of it, the story Vanessa had built over months began collapsing from the inside.
Brooke did not portray herself as innocent.
That made her account more believable.
She admitted following Vanessa into Melissa's apartment.
She admitted lying about her reason for visiting the hospital.
She admitted locking the nursery door.
She admitted grabbing Lily's blanket.
But she denied knowing Vanessa would raise the frame above the baby.
"I thought she was going to smash it against the dresser," Brooke told Detective Ellis.
Rachel listened later to the recorded interview with Grant and Naomi.
Brooke looked pale on the screen.
"I swear I didn't think she would do that over the baby."
Detective Ellis asked, "Why lock the door?"
"Because she wanted time."
"Time for what?"
"To get the key."
"What key?"
"I didn't know until today."
Brooke explained that Paul Danner had contacted Vanessa the previous evening.
He had learned the hospital was preparing to reinstate Nurse Claire Dawson.
If Claire returned, the feeding-line report might resurface.
Danner wanted Vanessa to remove anything Melissa had hidden in the nursery before an internal investigation began.
"How did Danner know Melissa hid something?" the detective asked.
Brooke stared at the table.
"Vanessa told him Melissa liked hiding documents."
"That sounds vague."
"It was."
"Then why the photograph?"
Brooke rubbed her hands together.
"Vanessa saw Melissa's old maternity nurse bring it in after Melissa died."
"What nurse?"
"Anna Reeves."
Rachel recognized the name.
Anna had worked with Melissa throughout the pregnancy.
Brooke continued.
"Vanessa said Melissa hated sentimental things when she was scared. She thought the frame was too obvious."
Detective Ellis leaned forward.
"And you believed her?"
Brooke nodded.
"Vanessa always notices things."
Rachel paused the recording.
"That is the first honest thing Brooke has said about her."
Grant did not smile.
They continued.
Danner had told Vanessa that a hospital attorney was reviewing access logs.
He warned that his name might appear.
Vanessa panicked.
She believed the evidence inside the frame could connect everything.
So she told Brooke they had one chance to get it.
Rachel happened to enter the nursery first.
That changed the plan.
"What was supposed to happen?" Detective Ellis asked.
Brooke looked toward the camera.
"Vanessa was going to take the frame, remove whatever was inside, and say it fell."
"Why was Lily beneath it?"
"Because Vanessa moved it there."
Rachel stopped the recording again.
Grant looked sick.
Brooke had described what happened before Rachel arrived.
Vanessa entered the nursery.
She took the family photograph from the wall.
She placed Lily's bassinet beneath the empty space.
Then she locked the wheels.
Rachel whispered, "She positioned her."
Grant stood and walked to the window.
Naomi remained silent.
They resumed.
Brooke said she told Vanessa to move the bassinet.
Vanessa refused.
She said if the frame broke over the mattress, everyone would believe it had fallen naturally.
Detective Ellis asked the obvious question.
"What if the baby was injured?"
Brooke began crying.
"Vanessa said Lily was already sick. She said nobody would question another complication."
Grant turned away from the screen.
Rachel felt rage move through her so quickly she had to stand.
On the video, Detective Ellis remained calm.
"And when Rachel entered?"
"Vanessa panicked."
"So she lifted the frame."
"Yes."
"Over Lily?"
Brooke closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The confession did not erase Brooke's role.
It made it worse in a different way.
She had known enough to stop Vanessa.
She had not.
But she had also finally provided investigators with something they did not yet have.
A location.
Paul Danner kept a second phone.
Vanessa used it to contact him.
Brooke had seen him hide it in his office behind a removable panel beneath a cabinet.
Hospital security found the phone forty minutes later.
Danner was escorted from the building.
The phone contained months of messages.
The messages did not prove Vanessa intended to kill Lily.
They proved something colder.
They proved Vanessa had spent months building legal control around a child who had not yet been born.
Danner helped her access medical schedules.
He helped upload the forged authorization.
He helped suppress Claire's report.
He warned Vanessa whenever Melissa complained.
In return, Vanessa transferred money to an account controlled by Danner's consulting company.
Brooke had delivered one of those payments in cash.
Grant read the messages without speaking.
One exchange took place the day Lily had surgery.
Vanessa: Is the father leaving tonight?
Danner: Probably around nine.
Vanessa: Make sure the nurse understands I have access.
Danner: Claire is a problem.
Vanessa: Then make her a problem for someone else.
Another exchange came forty minutes later.
Danner: Claire found the line.
Vanessa: Did she report it?
Danner: Yes.
Vanessa: Fix it.
Rachel looked at Grant.
His hands trembled.
Detective Ellis entered the room before they reached the next message.
"There's something you need to see."
She showed them a photograph recovered from Danner's phone.
It had been taken inside Lily's nursery.
Rachel recognized the bassinet.
The angle was high.
Near the ceiling.
Grant frowned.
"Where was the camera?"
Detective Ellis zoomed in.
The image showed a small black security device mounted above the nursery door.
Rachel remembered it.
Everyone did.
The hospital used the camera to monitor restricted pediatric rooms.
Detective Ellis said, "Danner had access to the video archive."
Grant looked at her.
"And?"

"The recording from yesterday wasn't deleted."
